Next Blues, Crusaders, Hurricanes coach discussion

From that article:
The Hurricanes are believed to have considered former All Blacks attack coach Brad Mooar but ultimately settled on Laidlaw as their preferred candidate. The Blues — after being knocked back by former Chiefs and Wallabies coach Dave Rennie and All Blacks assistant Joe Schmidt — are also understood to be keen on Laidlaw.
In the XVs space the Scotsman, who relocated to New Zealand 15 years ago, worked under Chris Boyd as the Hurricanes captured their sole Super Rugby title in 2015, and as an assistant at London Irish. The 45-year-old was previously approached by leading Irish clubs to join their coaching ranks, too, but preferred to bide his time with a view to landing a Super Rugby job.
Now that opportunity has arrived — it’s just a matter of whether it comes in Wellington or Auckland.Further south the Crusaders have locked in former All Blacks openside Matt Todd to fill Scott Hansen’s void as assistant coach and the six-time defending champions are gradually reaching the nitty gritty stage of their quest to replace Robertson.
While the Crusaders are up to two weeks away from anointing Robertson’s successor their next head coach is expected to emerge from a group comprising Vern Cotter, former All Blacks lock Ross Filipo and Rob Penney.
Vastly experienced coach Cotter has been in the Crusaders mix from the outset but the Herald understands Filipo, the Waikato head coach and Chiefs assistant, and Penney are now being strongly considered. The Crusaders are believed to be considering a two-year head coach appointment, before potentially promoting the highly-rated Tamati Ellison or pursuing former assistant Andrew Goodman who remains under contract at Irish club Leinster.
Such a strategy may favour the experienced Penney or Cotter taking charge. -

That's a fairly good choice to have isn't it? -
@nostrildamus Penney didn't do to well when in charge of the Waratahs. He got sacked.

Why is Laidlaw suddenly rated highly? He doesn’t have much experience in XV’s
He would be a risk but as an assistant coach he was VG (better than Holland) at the canes.
I'm surprised the Blues can't find someone else that's linked to Blues rugby in some way. As Laidlaw is with the canesIt's a concern the lack of experienced quality coaches. Anyone promising is in demand. Including Laidlaw and Ellison

That's assuming the article is correct. I would like Pivac or Coventry.
Pivac was initially talked about as a possibility and I don't think he's taken another job yet. Also, these articles never mention Coventry.. promoting him to head coach seems like a very good choice right in front of their noses

true (0 from 5 ain't great) but he did well with Canterbury. And Tahs coaches seem to get sacked a bit even in the Tahs role or afterwards..

@Duluth TC is quietly peeved that he wasn't considered as a frontline candidate
Always seemed like a good coach to me, decent experience and results.

I am sure if Clark Laidlaw is appointed head coach he would work with Tom Coventry,as they both coached Samoa to some success .Both men very experienced and players seem to play for them.Hope so,as a certain continuity would be assured.

The Herald understands the Crusaders are also reaching the pointy end of their search to replace Robertson, with Rob Penney emerging as the favourite to assume charge next year.
The Crusaders are thought to be choosing between former All Blacks lock Ross Filipo and Penney.
Given their relatively inexperienced coaching team, that will next year feature former All Blacks openside Matt Todd’s inclusion alongside Tamati Ellison, Dan Perrin and James Marshall, the Crusaders are thought to be leaning towards appointing the experienced Penney.

That's a fairly good choice to have isn't it?Cotter would be a far better option, Penney only had notable success at NPC level, his results overseas (Munster, NTT Shining Arcs, Waratahs etc..) were pretty average to say the least.
Cotter like Razor has delivered success with multiple teams in different environments, NPC appears to be Penney's level.
-
Not sure I like the Penny option either good for Canterbury in the NPC but has not stepped up very well as a coach since then.
The only thing about it is his deep Canterbury roots understanding the Crusaders culture.
Nothing really being said about a coach in the wind at all.

Joseph is reluctant to be in the news for anything other than coaching Japan, out of respect for his employers and for the magnitude of the task that awaits him.
You will not be reading much at all about his feelings on the All Blacks coaching appointment process, on whether he is interested in coaching at Super Rugby level again, or on reports linking him to a role with a Japanese club.
He described as "absolute rubbish" a Newshub report last week that he had signed to coach the Shizuoka club next season, and his coaching future was not a topic he wished to discuss.
"I’m contracted to Japan. It’s a big job with the big challenge of the World Cup, so that’s my focus."
Three New Zealand teams — the Crusaders, the Hurricanes and the Blues — will be looking for Super Rugby coaches next year with the elevation of, respectively, Scott Robertson, Jason Holland and Leon MacDonald to the All Blacks.
Joseph did not want to talk about whether a return to his home country was on the cards.
"I’m just really focused on doing my best for Japan. I’m contracted until December, and no doubt those jobs will have been filled by then."
He has not spoken in public since his bid for the All Blacks coaching job ended when Robertson was appointed, and Joseph does not intend to create a headline about the process.
"I’d rather not comment.
"They’ve obviously made the decision with Scotty and his coaches. The process is done and dusted, and I’ve got a job to do with Japan."
The man who guided the Highlanders to their Super Rugby title in 2015 has called on fans to have some patience as their team continues to struggle.
"It’s really difficult to observe a couple of games from the outside and then try to comment.
"They’ve had lots of changes. Lots of new coaches and players. Lots of inexperience. It takes time.
"It’s going to take Derms [coach Clarke Dermody] and his team some time. Quality guys, quality coaches — you just need to be a little bit patient."

Not that he was in the Blues' sights, but where does this leave them. Are they now talking to Cotter?
The deathly silence from Auckland implies either some behind the scenes recruiting that the gossip grapevine isn't picking up on or they are waiting for other teams to throw them the candidates they don't want.
