@Crucial How many of them are actually from Canterbury?
Don't know, don't care.
This coaching group however has been pulled from coaches and assistants all with links to the Crusaders and Canterbury. I expect that quite naturally there will be advantages to players that have also been part of those systems and a perception of bias from others which will become a deafening noise should the team not perform and other player options are overlooked.
Not saying that it will happen. I hope it doesn't. Doesn't mean I'm painting Razor as anything either.
Just hope that we don't start seeing losses on the backs of selections akin to the days of Hammet, Robinson, Ralph, Gibson and Razor.
I think there was one team with 13/15 Cantabs that came pretty close to being beaten by Ireland in Carisbrook. Will not McDonald have strong opinions on Blues players and Holland on Canes players, there is balance there.
Razor is a pretty smart coach he will want the best player's that fit his game plan and the Culture he wants to create.
There will be some players from Fosters time as coach not selected I am sure as they will not fit the Criteria Robertson and the coaches want,Always happens with a new coaching structure takes over, some elements gone and new ones added.I fully understand all of that.
I am saying that I hope the team does well because if it doesn't the accusations of red and black bias from the rest of the country will be loud if there are players that look like they are there because they are known ahead of form.Ok I see where you are coming from,I hope that as well.
Although form has not always been the absolute criteria in past AB coaching regimes selections, that in most coaching era's I think. -
two coaches of Maori heritage (MacDonald & Hansen) is a change from recent years, have to go back to 2017 when the professor was an assistant.

Wayne Smith? He is of scottish heritage.

Attack and defence patterns were based around Māori themes, unusual at the time but sensible given most of the players were Māori. Ironically Smith has no Māori blood at all. His Iwi is the Scottish Ross clan.

Will be interesting to see who the selectors are. Robertson will be one, and Ryan is currently one of Foster's selectors. I wonder if Schmidt is still interested?
My pick Razor,Ryan and McDonald.

I do wonder if they were chasing a certain Irishman, I was hoping for a bit more of a fresh voice on attack strategies.

Scott Robertson will break fresh ground by inviting all four assistants to the selection table when he replaces incumbent All Blacks coach Ian Foster next year.
Robertson also said he would invite someone with a "peripheral view'' to check the selections, and ensure there were no blind spots.

So you forget what happened in 2004? Smith, Hansen, Enoka, Shand, all from Crusaders came on board, even Crusaders baggage man Errol Collins moved to All Blacks in 2004.
And that's not to mention Henry who is from Christchurch.

yes but the coaching acumen goes up to 11!

I was hoping Razor would bring Goodman back from Leinster, I think he may be better than Holland, potentially MacDonald as well, he's only 40 years old with lots of growth left in him for sure, so maybe he's been locked in for Crusaders head coach in 2024?

@canefan the list of players that command that kind of respect seems to be dwindling, everyone seems to some question marks
At least Scooter appears to command his own spot in the team now
Now? Unless he's Fozzie's nailed on 6 then he doesn't command his own spot now.
He started every test that he was available for last year. Only come off the bench twice in the last 2 years.

The forwards and defense portfolio are arguably the most important at this level. Ryan is world-class, obviously there are no concerns there.
Hansen for defense is interesting, he clearly has a great rugby mind, he's proven himself as an excellent game-planner and attacking strategist for the Crusaders, but he's also showed his value as Japan's defense coach during the 2019 world cup.
Foster got it so terribly wrong in 2019 by retaining McLeod for the defense and then appointing the underqualified Plumtree as his forwards coach, a guy who ironically had forged his reputation at the Hurricanes & Lions as a defensive guru.
With Ryan's introduction I think we have a chance to win it this year, but it's generally the teams with the most effective defensive structures that win these tournaments (Nienaber, Smith, Muggleton, etc..) France have Edwards, Ireland have Farrell, while we have McLeod...
