Michelle Yeoh won best actress, genuinely surprised by that as they love Cate Blanchett.
They only missed out on one acting award they were up for - that was the actress who lost to Jamie Lee Curtis in Best Supporting Actress.
And yep, they just won Best Picture.

Gosh she is so bland and plain. I don’t understand the fascination at all.

Really? I think she's a good actress, she's not one of my favourites though, but really glad she didn't win for that turd of a film.

Yes, a strange take. I see that Brendan Fraser won too. Quite the comeback.

Weirdly, in a year which I've found the Oscar movies to be pretty low quality it's probably the most I've agreed with the winners.
I haven't seen The Whale, but he's supposed to be great in it.

The Academy showing they aren't fat shaming anymore?

That's awesome. He's been in some shit but always seemed like a nice (if very quirky) guy. Good for him. Interestingly enough, him and Short Round were both in Encino Man back in 1992. Who could have predicted this result now? Insane.

Sounds like a great future pub quiz question to me!

@Nepia Alright, now I've watched it: All facetiousness aside, it's a very good movie with excellent performances from each cast member. Brendan Fraser's performance is worthy of his Best Actor award IMO.

Ah right, I've heard that the performance is great but the movie isn't - I haven't watched it yet after recently watching TAR which had the same issue. Will probably watch it when it streams now it's got a positive review on the Movie review thread...

not a huge Oscar watcher, generally just see the results and normally couldn't tell you when thell be on...so strangely we watch Everything everywhere all at once over the weekend....thats a Mad film, can definitely tell some great acting going on but fucked if i really followed what was going on...definitely not one you can watch while scrolling on the phone
-
Finally watched Black Adam....I kind of liked it, the CGI seemed better than the last phase of Marvel ones
Also liked they called out what i thought were plot holes at first, people actually called out the random international team of superheroes that had ignored this country until it got its own superpowered person
the biggest problem i have was i want the back story of the justice society...dont know how they missed what marvel did with slowly bring them together

Everything, everywhere, all at once.
The most gods honest batshit crazy film I've ever seen in my entire life. Trying to explain what it's about is borderline impossible. Part Matrix, part Butterfly effect, part Jacky Chan.
Completely and utterly mental.
5 out of 5. Phenomenal.

I was slightly disappointed, but I was going in with fucking insanely high levels of expectation.
Very very good.
But more "quirky multiverse stuff" than "insane martial-arts multiverse stuff".
I think I was expecting "The One" - but done well, and with a bit of quirk, and a lady-fighter. (Sorry Jet Li - you're the fucking bomb, but that movie was a bomb. (Still a guilty pleasure but. Fuck... now I want to watch The One.)) -

I saw it well before awards season... I'd built up the hype in my own head from descriptions.

The One
- Jet Li. Fucking can't go wrong. Usually.
- This was obviously Jet Li having had a bit of Hollywood success, getting stoned one night...
-
- Doing the schoolboy/recent-movies bullshit "who would win between Iron-Man and Hulk? Between Batman and Superman? etc etc".
-
- Except Jet Li had also done a shit-tonne of coke, and was all "who would win a fight between... me... and me? Fuck, that'd be cool."
-
- And Highlander just happened to be playing in the background.
- Still a guilty pleasure of mine, once in a while.
-
- And obviously a guilty pleasure of Jet Li's... his absurd acting of the criminal version of himself, and the photos of his other selves... pure stoned indulgency.
- Statham is Statham.
- Fight scenes are pretty poor for a Jet Li movie... too much CGI, too many effects.
-
- Fuck - now I want to watch the Once Upon A Time In China series.
- Carla Gugino is kinda hot. But...
- Tit-watch: zero
- Plenty of plot-holes. But fuck it, it's super-powered Jet-Li fighting himself.
- At least they didn't play out the whole "which one of these identical pricks is the good one?" schtick. They had to do it, but they kept it short.
- They even refrained from using the "dog smells out the bad guy" trope, and even turned it around.
3.5 over-powered-grenades out of 5 that-didn't-do-shit.
