Not that these pre-tournament games mean that much, but does anyone know the score from the Chiefs-Hurricanes game in Taupō?

I assume that the Chiefs and Blues U20s will be playing this weekend too.

@Canes4life I wouldn't be surprised if Taha Kemara is playing for the Crusaders U20s.

@Bovidae Haven't seen anything from the Chiefs-Canes U20 game. Pretty disappointing. They (Canes) announce a team, but no follow-up at all.

Edited to add that Kemara arrived with the Crusaders in Fiji.

@Winger No, Tino Savea is not related to Ardie and Julian. He's from New Caledonia.

Unfortunately, only a very brief write-up on the Club Rugby website.

The Huricanes U20s were first up on the day and scrambled to a 31-31 draw with the Crusaders U20s.

The Crusaders U20s led 31-10 after 55 minutes and had the game seemingly under control.

Both sides emptied their benches and the Hurricanes got a second wind and came back to score in the corner through captain and openside Cooper Flanders. Replacement first-five Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula slotted the sideline conversion to close the gap to 31-17. The Hurricanes scored two more converted tries over the final 10 minutes to lock it up to 31-31, the final score.

The squads will be named in the next few days I would think, so I am interested in who is in the Barbarians squad. Often that includes players who missed out in playing the previous year due to injuries etc. I hope it's a strong team again.

Have MP and Drua played any warmup games? Or are they going to be severely underdone?

@Bovidae I haven't heard anything about other U20s games than those mentioned in this thread, but MP came very late to the party (mid-January), so have probably been fishing in the same "left-overs" pond as the NZ Barbarians.

    Moana Pasifika U20 coaching group

Gus Leger has been appointed as Head Coach and brings with him a wealth of experience in youth rugby development. Having most recently held the title of Assistant Coach for the 2022 New Zealand Secondary Schools team, the former-Tongan international is very familiar with the targeted age group.

Currently employed as a teacher, he has held coaching roles at Auckland Rugby, the New Zealand Barbarian Schools, Auckland Marist, Wesley College & Sacred Heart College.

Three Assistant Coaches, Nili Latu, Doug Sanft & Shalom Senara, have been appointed to join Leger for the 2023 campaign.

Prior to the appointment of the coaches, Moana Pasifika Pathways Manager Leasiosiofaasisina Kevin Senio and Team Manager Lauaki Ramsey Tomokino performed talent identification in Samoa & Tonga at the end of 2022 during the Oceania Rugby Under 20s campaign.

Most recently, Moana Pasifika High Performance staff also held combines across New Zealand to find the next generation of Pasifika players.

An Expression of Interest (EOI) form received over 500 applications and the young men were invited to attend combines in eight different locations spanning from Auckland to Dunedin.

The coaching staff were thoroughly impressed with the talent on display and will be naming the team on Wednesday 15th March.

That Blues squad has 6 players from the NZ U19s and 8 from the 2022 NZ Schools/Barbarians/Māori teams. Also some from the previous years NZ Schools squad.

I wondered where Reuben Palmer was, as he was in the Chiefs U20s last year, but wasn't in the wider squad this year.

@SouthernMann It's depressing how Hawke's Bay keep losing players to other provinces. A One Lolofie is a good prop out of Hastings Boys' and Max Ratcliffe is a very good loosie (6/8) and former captain of Napier Boys'. Both are a big loss to us..

Brad Campbell is a halfback out of Lindisfarne College and Mefi Tupou is an excellent, strong midfielder/wing, who played for Hastings Boys' (2019 Top 4 champ). Both Campbell and Tupou aren't recent school leavers. Tupou has already a year Magpies academy under his belt, was in the 2022 Hawke's Bay U19 team and was named in the 2022 NZ U19 team, but didn't play due to injury. Campbell already moved to Dunedin, last year.

Correction: Campbell attended St John's College, Hastings, not Lindisfare College.
