Laidlaw started a quicker, more youthful, but inexperienced team. I assume that was due to the conditions, which are a lottery. Ironically, coming second in the group looks to be an advantage (GB vs Arg).

Sth Africa 05 - 10 Uruguay with two minutes left. Fingers firmly crossed!

Not sure that great, means we play them in the quarters, right?

Not after they also lose to Ireland in their last game as two losses will relegate them to the dunce's division.

Well the first part of that prediction proved 100% spot on but sadly Uruguay played like a soggy gingernut and somehow lost to the almost never winning Canadian side to let the Saffa's flounder through on points differential.

Argentina beat Samoa 19-12 in the first QF. Fiji will beat SA.

Let's hope NZ plays better next.

    NZ beat GB 24-12.

GB very good at hanging on to the ball but made our defence look good as they have little penetration or ability to manipulate.
The stats on possession and passes must have been hugely in their favour.

    Cup Semi Final

    11.36am: NZ v Australia

    The other semi:

    11.14am: Argentina v Fiji

Of the teams in the top 4 of the overall standings, only NZ has reached the semis.

South Africa will stay in the top 4, but Samoa and France will be replaced by Fiji and Argentina.

NZ started really well but then lost their way in the 1st half when GB had a player in the bin. Were lucky not to go down to 6 men themselves.

South Africa getting flogged by Samoa 31 - 00 and still five minutes to play. At this rate they might concede a half century!

    None of this is bad.

@NTA Samoa avoid the indignity of having to go through the down trou arse raping of the Sth Africans by deliberately letting in a try to avoid such an act a smashing of that size warranted. Nonetheless 45 - 05 is a complete humiliation and is sure to be met with great joy by my grandson Tusi down at St. Pats Primary Kilbirnie when he learns of the score at lunchtime. Wonder if the teachers will have let the kids watch the game live as part of their cultural and religious studies as there are a good number of other Samoan's in his room anyway?

Commentator here loved Leroy Carter, calling him an all action hero, likening him to Bruce Willis..

..personally I think it is too early to say he has early onset dementia but certainly believe he is the type of character to end up in dodgy movies..

His more controlled aggression in contact is really a standout for this team, and creates so many opportunities. The combination with Webber is fantastic too, with the pair of them probing to put a runner away. Our attack is vastly better recently. I really like Solo as finisher. The kick and chance is so valuable when done well.

Fineanganofo looks like a keeper, and Spencer is doing well for one so young.

And Tom Selleck was playing for Aust.

    Payback against the Argies hopefully.

@Bovidae We are not giving away the breakdown penalties so readily this tournament. Bodes well. Need to keep Moneta in check though. I hope Solo starts the final.

@ARHS It all comes down to the ref. I thought that Nick Hogan (a Kiwi) penalised Fiji off the park in the last 2 mins of the SF.

I have also noticed that players trying to roll away are often held in, and get penalised. That happened to Carter against GB when his leg was quite clearly held. Obviously coached to win penalties.

Laidlaw needs to pick the right starting seven. I was surprised that Dickson, Collier and Nicole all started vs Aust, and their lack of pace on defence was exposed a couple of times.

19 all between Samoa and GB in the 5th place play-off. Samoa had a man in the bin when GB scored their last try.

Going to extra time. GB win the coin toss.

Quite a long extra time (2 x 5 minutes?) for sevens.

Excellent attack from Samoa. That was awesome! They score the winning try and finish 5th.
