@Machpants not sure if its the same approach but in Gisborne the fibre runs over their bridges and stuff. So when the bridges come down so does the internet

our turn
Severe weather warning. Rain fall totals of up to 200ml every 6 hours (we won't get that much) and thus the associated flood watches. Gulf country and cape today, us from later tonight.

@mariner4life I was going to say that's a slow drinking rate - had wine on the mind rather than rain!
Good luck bro, weather is out to fuck us all lately. Kia kaha!

nah nothing to worry about here mate. Cape communities might get a bit isolated for a while if it really comes down (ground is soaked and reservoirs are full) but it's nothing serious

man the devastation Gabrielle has wreaked (is that a word) on the North Island is so hard to comprehend!
Whole communities are cut off, we havent heard from some in our napier office, I hear there are 1400 people still not been in contact with family/friends in affected regions, 4 people have died so far, this is surreal.
Still hard to get on do normal work at moment, and the work from Gabrielle is only trickling in at moment, I expect this is largely due to lack of power and comms for many.
This is just unprecedented in NZ, going to have a similar impact on the NZ insurance industry as the earthquakes did, change is coming.
Satellite footage of Gabrielle from Aus to NZ...

Yeah, I remember that Cyclone Bola was really bad but it didn't have the impact around HB (aside from Wairoa) that Gabrielle is having.
My sister's lucky as she's in one of the areas of Hastings that still has power but a lot of the other family have been evacuated/without power. She actually works for a company that sells generators (ironically they don't have one at their yard though and are out of power) and her boss is trying to get Auckland to bring back a bunch but he can't find a reasonably safe route at the moment.

Couple of things.
I'm now actively involved in rectification works from the event that sparked this thread.
Which kinda leads to a slightly lighter note ... being that I have officially been to Whoop Whoop.
Ex-TC Seth dropped an imperial (not the relatively sized metric) fuck ton (no "ne") of rain back in January last year. (Like 1m+)
Did really bad things to creek crossings in the west of the region.
One of the sites I'm working on is Whoop Whoop Road. It's a real place.
The other thing, and my personal jury is out on 'Chippy', but his comment post Gabby and EQ that he's looking out the window for the plague of locusts made me smile.
