I can't see how McWhannell stays now, unless McMillan wants a thousand locks in his squad. I'll be fucked off if that happens as he has so much more upside than MSR.
Yep I can understand McWhannel moving,(c'mon down to Canes), but kind of agree this is more about after WC when Lurch goes? Nothing like a couple of 2m+ locks in the squad.
McWhannel moving,(c'mon down to Canes)..nah at 1.98m too tall for the Canes..would block out the Wellingtonian sun...

There is the opportunity to look for a specialist no.7 to replace PGS. There are already enough 6/8s in the squad, and Boshier only signed on for 2023. Cane isn't getting any younger as well.
Boshier's brother apparently doing well at Saitama.

@ploughboy ehhhh idk about this one
I guess they were pretty stuck with the loss of Angus. I doubt there’s a kiwi tight head of Super quality left, especially when we effectively feed 6 teams which is nearly 20 THs signed up.
Much planning would have been around Angus as well.
I d rather not have this situation but it could have some advantages of exposure to NH play -
I saw Ta'avao at the supermarket a few weeks ago and he was wearing his neck brace.
The young props in the region are all LHs, but none have even made their mark at NPC level yet. Moli will need to step up, and Dyer has a big role to play now too.
I assume that Mafileo's neck injury ruled him out too?

@Crucial would love to see tewhata-Colley off the back of a super pre season. Surprised no one took him as a wider this year
Hardly in the picture to replace an AB though unless you already has good strength in that position.
-
@muddyriver I had heard the chiefs were interested in him last year, but things didnt pan out, but heard he is putting in the mahi at the moment though!
Reckon he would be awesome at the next level up, love watching him play.

@Crucial his around the field work is top notch. A very big body that uses it well. Just needs a bit more gas tank.
Needs work on the scrum hot and cold, think he rests here now and then.
He comes into mitre 10 off the back of pig hunting and no gym, so with proper training year round he'd be a monster. -
@muddyriver for me and I mean this with the greatest respect he needs to head back to Western Sharks , I Know Coree does some great things in the Hokianga community but in terms of getting decent rugby he needs to head South ..
Sharks have got a very good forward pack and I believe they have picked up a promising loosehead prop Trinity McQueen from Thames Valley ,Chiefs U20 training squad ,NZ Babarians U20 and there’s a possibility Patrick Robinson might be returning -
The Chiefs are moving swiftly to replace Warren Gatland, with a new assistant coach expected to be appointed before Christmas.
And that person will not be the only new face amongst the coaching team for next season, with the highly-experienced Paul Feeney having already arrived to help ease the load on head coach Clayton McMillan.
The Chiefs will bring in a new lineout coach as Gatland’s replacement, with Chiefs chief executive Simon Graafhuis saying they were close to finalising who that will be, having opted to look within their own provincial unions. -
So the Blues and Crusaders have all the elite players, yet the Chiefs finished with 1 more loss than Crusaders last year in the regular season, 2022 final standings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Super_Rugby_Pacific_season
Also in 2021 - finished with 3 losses to Crusaders 2, making final ahead of Blues (4 losses), pretty impressive for a side with such a lack of elite players.
-
@kiwi_expat because, unlike the other sides, the Chiefs have elite coaching to make up for a lack of elite talent
