Euros 2016

I've been a fan of Spain in the tikka takka years (tikka takka is great if by a team you're supporting, but probably painful if you don't support them). But, I am glad to see that alternative kit no more. Disgraceful.

What is it with kits the last 10 years? Do UEFA and FIFA have a policy now that even the shorts can't clash? So many times teams unnecessarily wearing alt kits, or their kits butchered by moving away from a traditional shit/shirt combo. Ruins the legacy. -

France v Tonga. Nuff said.

65,340,000 v 104,500

and I was there ...... -

Italy were superb this morning, talk about having a game plan and sticking to it. It genuinely looked like they had an extra player on the field. Still given all that, Spain did get close to equalising - they were creating chances in the 2nd half unlike ...

England ... I did think the early goal might be a bad idea. Given it was sort of handed to them when Sterling wasn't going to score. Was watching on Skygo at work and of course it crapped out at that point. Got a text saying "terrible defending", agreed that Iceland were poor for the first goal - then the feed came back and it was 1-1 already. The second goal was a prime example of how to defend as cones. Just filling a space and letting Iceland pass round them. And then of course, Hart did what Hart does. At half time, he was tracking at 5 shots on target, 4 goals conceded for the whole tournament.

The longer the game went on, the less England looked like scoring. Rooney got worse and worse and probably should retire now - he isn't a midfield player. Kane's deliveries got worse and worse, and still no idea why he was taking all of the dead balls. Sterling and Sturridge showed just what they are - players for the highlights reels who wouldn't even get on the bench for a top European club.

Pleased for Iceland though - not only did they deserve the win, they did it with a great game plan, they always kept one or 2 guys up front and more than once looked like getting a 3rd.
-

So this may not be the crowning achievement of his career.

I'll see myself out. -

What do you expect if you pick a team full of Tottenham players? To actually win something?

Iceland are a great, feel good story.

Who the fuck is going to win this thing? I still think Germany, but the Italians were pretty bloody good.
-
How the fark did that happen? It's like the Allblacks losing to Namibia.
-

Not quite, England are pretty shit at football. It's more like Samoa losing to Namibia.

She's a funny old game tournament soccer. Because of the scoring, results like this come up reasonably often. It's not that long since Greece won the Euro tournament. Not sure they had ever even won a finals game before that?

Iceland now get France. They are again, a realistic chance. They are organised and disciplined, and France are very French, hardly a united squad, playing erratic football. France should win by a couple, but...
-

The players from the 1950 team that lost to USA at the WC will be happiest. Erased from the record books.

Gary Lineker's tweet:

The worst defeat in our history. England beaten by a country with more volcanoes than professional footballers. Well played Iceland.
-

I was going to say Australia, but Namibia works I suppose.......
-

shit stirrer

-

It is a huge upset based on Iceland's history up until the past few years - they have been getting great results more recently which is how they ended up making the last 16 of the Euros. And given England's recent tournament history, it would have been a much bigger shock had Iceland knocked out Germany or Spain.

Denmark winning 92 is good story. They were a late replacement because Yugoslavia erupted into civil war.
-
