Golf eh? What a bloody shitpot game.

Ten days ago I played in an invitational tournament and couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo. 5 days later playing in a nothing 9 hole early morning get together and played bloody well. Please explain.
-

Not so much about our golf but I thought this an interesting view on things.

Always found it hard to warm to Williams. I acknowledge that he's put a fair bit back into the community though
-

Probably the wrong site for this, but anybody know much about golfing in Surrey, UK?

We've just had an offer accepted on a house there (near Epsom) and I'm looking to join a club. We are very close to RAC Woodcote - I know some members there who have offered to invite me in, but I suspect that may be a little bit stuffy for the likes of this kid. Cuddington and Banstead downs are also nearby with both looking like nice courses.
-

Where, JK?

I love November, it's my most social Golf month. Two golf tours and the Shootout and for me this month as club champ I have Waikato Champion of Champions.

Played out at helensville. Pretty decent country course.

We got 3rd but didn't play overly well. Heaps of free booze tho and an amazing day for it -

You're gonna be spoiled for choice MR, Surrey is stacked full of golf courses, there's Epsom itself, Chipstead is nearby, I can't really comment though as I've not played either. I have played Walton Heath which is not that far way and it's a great course but bloody tough (do NOT get in amongst the heather). However all are likely to be expensive. For the RAC I'd expect you'd actually have to join the club proper - The RAC that is not the golf club?

Try this link for a guide to local courses, not all the info you'll need for all the courses but will set you on the right road.

Just a bit of blowing ones own trumpet but got my 3rd eagle of the year on Tuesday. They've all been 3s on par 5s and i didn't think my 3inch tap in on the 2nd at gulf harbour would be bettered but it was.

Tuesday i lipped out for a 2 on the 450m par 5 13th (the wrecker) at Titirangi. Left me with about an 8inch putt for eagle on one of the better par 5s out there. Was playing with Titirangi members too so got a lot of kudos from them. Felt good. Rest of the round was just as erratic as ever!

-

First post in here for 6months...wow!

Just wanted a share a shot from the beautiful Rajpruek golf club in Thailand. Played here yesterday. Hire clubs and a 25year old thai bird as my caddy in 40degrees so things I'm not use to. Oh and distances in yards too! Took me a white to get use to it all so went 46 out (actually off 10) and then 37 coming home a couple of really good birdies including a tap in one on 548yard par 5. Not a long course at about 6500 yards off the back (which we played) but punishing if you miss the fairway or the green. Lots of water and sand. Greens hard and fast. Not sure if any at all were flat.

Has to be the flashest course I've played at. No green fee players and only can play via a member invite. Membership is 2.3million bhat and the club rooms are amazing. Had an exception meal after the round too.

There's a bloke in long sleeves and slacks, are you sure it's 40 degrees ?

I'm no golfer but have become an instructor to my 16 year old "Stepson" who has to pass a module for PE. Apparently being an awesome caddy at Corp golf back in the day, drinking a can or two a hole and being able to crack it a fair distance at the driving range easily places me as the best golfer in his young impressionable life. "Maoris don't play golf" he laments.....I mentioned Phil Tautarangi and Michael Campbell and got a blank look in return......

So anyway, I've mentioned this to Taniwharugby, he has to hit at least 140 yards ( or metres ) with a 5 iron, get's six shots in which to do it. TR advised me to advise him to bend the knees slightly, not to use the baseball grip.....anyone got anything else which might help ? bear in mind I'm assuming no one here is at TRs level so might remember being shit better than he can.
-

Yeah slacks and was wearing those skin sleeves things on his arms. Not sure what they do but popular with asian golfers.

Re the son - nothing wrong with baseball grip if it works and feels natural for him. Big focus would be stance and ball placement for the sweetest connection. You didnt mention anything about accuracy or direction so assume just needs a good clean hit to get it that distance? He wont need to try hit it hard. Will just need to concentrate on swinging it through and if the ball is in the way it'll go.

Youtube basic golf setup or something like that and take him to the range. 50 balls and he should be hitting them sweet enough to go 140m.
-

Took him over the weekend and he got the odd one that was good intersperced with a whole lot of terrible shots. He doesn't have clubs so sent him a link on youtube of some swings.
-

Just so you know JK, they do that to avoid the sun and sunburn. Not for a health reason but for a status reason. If you're black you're poor and obviously work outside, ergo you mustn't be rich and being rich is THE most sort after status in Thailand/Asia.

Whitening creams and other bullshit products is a multi billion dollar industry.

A great day out, the golf in Thailand eh? Starts with locker rooms and from then on you're treated like a pro
-

MN5, two easy things I think help beginners (happy to be shot down though)

1) Keep all of left foot on the ground through the swing (assuming he's right handed)

2) Don't bend the left arm on the backswing
-

I said TO USE the baseball grip!

Grip and set up, everything else is just hit it, give him to omuch stuff to think about and it'll ruin him.
-

Cheers for that. Thought was sun related. Started well before the locker rooms. Drive in to the baggage unload area (3 lanes wide) and pop the boot for the guys to get the clubs out of and set up your cart for you!
-

Golfing in Asia is fucking awesome, apart from one very small thing. Speed.

Chinese & Korean golfers think 5 hours for a round is normal. And that's using karts.

Nothing pisses you off more than players marking balls etc when they lip out.
-

I played with 3 of the Korean U19 team one time in a tournament, they werent exactly quick, but then when you hit it 240 down the middle, then onto the green more times than not, it makes for a decent time, but if they werent on the fairway, they were slow...but I also know whne they are out practising on the course, they hit a ball in the rough, they dont even go get it, so was always a good way to stock up and get a few new Pro V's (cos these guys were mostly good, short off the tee but damn straight) except the girls ones as they usually drew red hearts on them! :)
