I wonder if the Kherson offensive was a ruse? Get the Russians reinforcing west of the river then bottleneck them after the bridges are blown. Then real counter attack in Kharkiv oblast.
Its the only thing that makes the 'much publicused' part of the Kherson offensive make sense. I just thought every one in the modern age were just blabber mouths. Maybe they were smarter than I thought. Including some US source going off record saying they had helped with the Khrrson plan, advising to limit it etc. That kind of off-record comment made me roll my eyes, but if it was a ruse then my impression should be revised up.
Maybe I'm giving too much credit, could just be opportunism.

@Rapido it makes a lot of sense and given the US intel and advice Ukraine is receiving I'm sure that is helping with tactics (or is it strategy... I always get that mixed up). From a bunch of sources today it sounds like the biggest surprise has been how fast and how far the offensive has gone. Seems Russian defense in depth was pretty shallow and now a big issue is the number of POWs!

Looks ripe for encirclement if Russia still has forces available.
-
@antipodean surely Ukraine won't be oblivious to that risk, and if they are rolling the dice you'd hope it's a calculated risk.

Well it's happened to vastly superior armies than Ukraine's. Withdraw, extend enemy's logistics train as they chase their success, encircle, cut off and destroy.
I'd expect the Russians to have this in their specialitet curriculums.

This is pretty gnarly. Apparently sub launched missiles striking at power plants. Seems a real case of if we can't win the war we'll fuck your infrastructure as best we can.

A bit of scorched earth as they head toward winter.

@NTA to make them buy more gas! oh, wait!
I read the strikes were on civilian power stations, but I have no idea if there is/was a military rationale for hitting them - or if it's just Russia kicking some toys over on their way back to their border.
-
@antipodean just wait for Russian to accidentally nuke them instead of the Ukrainian forces

@MajorRage Pretty fucken scary to be fair, as long as Putin is in power this war is not going to end. He seems to be escalating in terms of numbers, 3-400,000 soldiers is a lot of cannon fodder for Ukraine and the west to get through. I wonder if this is exactly how the west viewed Hitler as he marched into Poland. I just feel sick at all the innocent people that have died and will continue to die in their thousands. Fuck humans and our stupid brains that allow us to be brainwashed and tribal.

I think Putin is a history buff. I expect he knows what happened when the last Tsar entered into an ill advised and catastrophic war.....

If you look at Putin's objectives and philosophy - Greater Russia, keeping NATO away from his doorstep, global influence, splitting the West - he's already lost big, big time.
Add into the mix he's destroyed his energy leverage on Europe, lost half his navy, make his much-vaunted military look like idiots and managed to re-arm Europe's biggest economy (Germany) against him and it's a cluster-fuck of epic proportions. Just pisses me off tens of thousands will die before it ends.

Would recommend everybody reads this.
I’ve not fact checked any of it, but it’s a pretty interesting read
Good god, that's some delusional shit right there.
Has anyone told the Japanese or ze Germans that they're still being occupied by the US? Hope they don't read this, it could be WW3!!!

As he scoops up hundreds of thousands of unwilling conscripts I am sure this will piss some ordinary Russians off.
