I still don't know why Guptill, Santner and Bracewell are in the team. At least the first two have been heroes in black in the past. But they hurt us at least as much as they help. And Bracewell is just bizarre. An old journeyman who seems to be teacher's pet right now
Averages over 50 in ODIs……
But then you need to have a look at the small print and realise that his 11 matches are made up of three vs the Netherlands, three vs Ireland, one vs Scotland and three vs the West Indies……Never actually dismissed vs Ireland scoring 127*, 42* and 21*. Take out those scores and his record is shite. A bog standard minnow basher if ever I saw one.
He's barely played top tier nations. Sometimes numbers are deceiving...
Absolutely. His averaged over 60 ( !!! ) going into the Oz game and I had to double check.
But given our history he’ll probably have a longish career as a bits and bobs type player.

**Bog standard against Ireland - quality Fern punning.
**
Seriously, though, no one else stood up ... so fair play to the fella. And that's the selectors job - see whose technique and temperament will handle the step up to harder bowling/tougher situationsI’m glad you like what I did there.

He's 31 as well. Surely we should be looking at a younger option. Latham was average behind the stumps too. Where is Phillips? He'd be about as effectual at wicket taking as Bracewell

Interesting in the comments on Bracewell is that;
-
None, zero, zilch of the other fringe candidates stepped up against "only" Ireland, and not many against the other minnows this northern summer. I'd argue there's some conflation of Test and ODI form buried in the sleep deprivation from watching the UK & Europe based stuff.
-
The alternatives being the likes of Philips and Nicholls... plenty of posts about who people don't want, but not many clear and obvious replacements being argued for on recent form...
That said, given the general Black Caps selection approach I wouldn't be surprised to see either a straight swap today of Bracewell for Philips, or Allen maybe slotting in at the top of the order and others shuffling down...
The talk around how long Kane should have bowled Boult has distracted a little bit from how the others went. Santner is a perennial pinata on TSF, but Lochie was also very underwhelming as a third seamer on Tuesday.
Given the state of the pitch do they bring in Southee for Lochie, or perhaps decide that Southee is too like for like with Henry in ODI's now to risk it...

really? Southee, Boult and Henry all want the new ball. Old ball Southee is going to be pummelled by the Aussies I fear; would rather take raw pace and the inaccuracy of Ferguson than Southee.
If you want Southee, then Henry is dropped I suspect.
Selection's easy from here

Indeed. I'm sure I also have a vague memory of Shane Bond taking 7 for sod all against Australia, but we still lost because in that instance we gambled on bowling out Bond and then the rest of the bowlers still couldn't do the job. While there was no Michael Bevan or Andy Bichel in sight on Tuesday, I reckon Kane was probably dammed either way with that one.
