Can't say I'm overwhelmed by this appointment - I probably would have preferred Dave Hewett, but I'm a long way from making an informed assessment.
 
Let's hope Razor is better than his recent efforts with the Under 20s suggest - and that Dave Hewett sticks around as forwards coach.
 
Be interesting to see what happens with Schmidt from here. I guess if he rocks up as coach of Bay of Plenty, we can conclude that the Crusaders passed up on him and can judge accordingly.
 
Overall, our recent Super coach appointments haven't been overwhelming - Tana, Boyd, Reluctant Tony Brown, Razor. These guys are all a fair step away from AB-ready coaches - indicative that the big guns are reading the writing on the wall that Hansen is signing on for 2019 and Foster has both feet in the door for afterwards?

Scott Robertson is an excellent appointment. He has worked his way up through the system from club level, and has won two ITM Cup titles. That's more than the rest of the current Super Rugby head coaches combined. Sure, this year's NZ U20s campaign wasn't flash, but give him some credit he did win the tournament last year for goodness sake. To posters who are underwhelmed by Robertson's appointment, I would simply ask; what more do you want from a rookie Super Rugby coach?

The thing that's a bit underwhelming to me is that if we've been leaving no stone unturned in digging up a new coach, we've pretty much ended up with the default that Sammy identified in post #2 of the thread.
 
It's far from a surprising appointment, but I would have been more excited with a big gun coach - particularly if they'd announced that Robbie was returning! :)

I've been impressed when hearing Scott talk about the game and his approach to coaching. Had no idea about the underbelly of selection bias etc in terms of Canterbury but from an outsiders perspective I reckon he's paid his dues and worked through the system.

He might be new but at least he's been a head coach!!

With one of the best teams we've seen in years (and some pretty good coaches around him, too). 
 
This year, with a team that has a reasonable amount of talent, they looked terrible. He basically decided that we should run at all costs, from all areas of the field, despite the torrential rain. It is all well and good wanting to play expansive rugby, but at least try and go about it smarter than that.

while the path he has tread to get to where he has is one people want more so compared to some others that get appointments, but you could argue with the cattle he has had at his disposal, those results were expected anyway, aside from this year.
 
So while on the surface underwhelming, guess we will have to see what he does next year, especially without the crusaders main strike weapon.

 I coulda sworn Dave Rennie had two Super titles with the Chiefs, an NPC title with Wellington, and three consecutive World U20 titles with the Baby Blacks.
 
Edit: And oh yeah, as TR said, a recent annihilation of a top tier international side.

My guess is Cantabfan4life79 was meaning at time of appointment his credentials were better...but then as I said above, the expectations were to win anyway, it wasn't like he took a team like NH and made them into the team they should be with their resources.

A bloke like Schmidt, Cotter or Deans. International experience and a man manager.
 
Or even Rob Penny. But it's pretty obvious he doesn't suck the right c##k to even be considered.
 
At least when he was coach of Canterbury he was out watching club rugby every weekend, same with Deans and Wayne Smith for that matter.
 
The only time I've seen Robertson is at the odd Sumner game, and he was acting like a total buffoon.

This, the team looked poorly coached, unprepared for wet weather rugby and a complete disaster at the set piece. This all relfects on coaching and selection in my opinion

Won't be a problem now as Crusaders coach as their recruiting focus is much further north than the Canterbury club rugby scene.
 
Very positive appointment for the other four NZ franchises. Will surely solidify over the next 18 months the Crusaders fall from being the defacto franchise of choice for most players when it comes to recruitment.
 
What an absolute stunner - another AB gets a coaching gig. That's what 8 of the last 10 appointments? Too lopsided to believe this is even close to merit based - especially when you look at the talent forced overseas and what they are achieving.

I am extremely happy that the NZRU has rewarded a highly successful ITM Cup coach with a SR job. What's the point of running provincial Rugby if it isn't a breeding ground for SR players and coaches?

I'm usually more in favour of having a process similar to the way the ABS have been developing players, where ITM Cup coaches are recognized and brought in to the Super format, where if they are then (judged to be) successful, they get to go up to head coach roles. I prefer that as it shows where ITM Cup should rightly be - a lower grade of rugby where success may not translated to the higher level.
 
I should note that Dave Rennie has worked out pretty well for us at the Chiefs - and he doesn't fill that criteria. We got lucky - but he also had very experienced assistants.
 
And, the con side will bring up Hammett too, I guess :)
 
Anyway, it looks like an underwhelming appointment right now - that U20s team were proper shit compared to what they should have been, mainly for reasons within his control.

For some strange reason, some people think that last year's success had everything to do with the quality of the players and nothing with Razor's coaching skills, yet this year, the failure of the team to make the semis, has everything to do with his (lack of) coaching skills and nothing with the quality of the players. Odd reasoning in my opinion. I think this year's squad - especially many (but not all of) the forwards - was not of the same quality as last year's. That may have to do with selection choices, but could also have to do with the talent available.
 
Having said that, I think I'd prefer a new SR coach to have some experience at SR levels coaching before becoming head coach. So appointing an SR assistant coach or a coach with experience at English premiership teams, national teams etc. makes more sense to me than a coach with "only" NPC coaching experience, no matter how good his results have been. However, if the media are correct, the players seem to prefer Robertson and a lot of players still need to be re-signed. The way a head coach fits in a team and the team culture may be important, too.
 
Edit: like Billy Tell, I think it's good just to wait and see how he goes next season before concluding it was a bad appointment.
