The only time Matt Dawson has ever made me laugh was straight after the 2003 rwc when his club moved him to centre to make room for a halfback who couldn't get a super 12 spot.
-

An ad asking what the fans would do for a win? Have another pint isn't even mentioned once. -

In order to win the game, they had to score a try though. Given how strong they had looked with the ball in hand, they should have backed themselves in being able to do it from 20 out in my view. If they can't do it from 20 out, they are even less likely to do it from 90 out, so effectively all they did for me hand themselves a loss by less points, when a draw was realistically on the table.

Yeah I see that. What I'm trying to say though is that by going for the try they are effectively saying we'll settle for the draw. By taking the kick and then backing themselves for a (less likely) try they are saying we're going for the win.

The only thing that makes either option correct is in succeeding in your aim. I found their aim to be laudable. That it was the more risky option and that it backfired on them doesn't IMO make the aim any less laudable. As an England fan I would have been gutted to have to settle for a draw so late in the game but to have lost the game in that manner would have been devastating. I reckon if that had have happened you wouldn't now be able to lay money on Aus taking it 3-0.
-

To be fair to Dawson (yeah I know that just sounds stupid), it was not an actual ad, just him having another "look at me" moment.

Whilst on the topic of things that miss the mark, I personally found all of the official RFU "#carrythemhome" bollocks a load of, well, bollocks. Particularly when "#carrythemout" was the end result. I'm a bit disappointed that Twickenham hasn't yet been ritually purged of all those slogans dubbed on every available surface.

Then again, maybe it would require a Lancaster mentality to make that a post RWC priority and fortunately Jones seems to focus on the more essential stuff -

There's been a fair bit from Eddie regarding the treatment of the England squad whilst in Aus which may be accurate, there have been some issues previously. Usually quite minor and annoying more than anything but then I saw a transcript of the Steve Hollies interview with Jones. I mean, what the actual fuck?

From the Daily Telegraph:-

“And the lads were pumped up, there was a bit of moisture out there and I think you and Glen (Ella) had a good moment, looked lubed up and a fair bit of shrinkage. Read that Hoiles thing. Thought WTAF as you did but didn't get back to post on it. Weird. I suspect he's gping for "The Footy Show" type Aussie Bogan Humour schtick. But seems to have just come across dickheadish. -

Hoiles et al have a new show on Wednesday nights for FoxSports - The Other Rugby Show I think its called.

I went to a taping of The Cup Runneth Over last year. They had Andrew whatsisname on from the Eastern side of the ditch (CGW guy?). It was cool.
-

"Aussie Bogan Humour schtick which means he comes across dickheadish."

Fixed it for you.
-

cant be arsed reading through the entire thread, but Eddie is great value!

He and Cheika are mates too aren't they? Talking Aussie up, as well as having the best coach in the world, brilliant!
-

I don't know exactly how "matey" Cheika and Jones actually are. Having genuine mates coaching against each other is not unlike having two mates who are WWE wrestlers, one being the good guy and other being the "heel". Eddie Jones is playing the "heel" role beautifully. It really helps when your team is winning. I'm really enjoying the banter coming from this series (apart from Hoiles who appears to be something of a tosser on TV - I'm glad he apologised).

Even better would be to have two mates who are members of parliament on opposite sides of the political spectrum. There would be some magic banter there. Wrestling in the debating chamber anyone? Trading insults over housing policy?
-
they were great mates apparently as both weren't skippies; played for same pack I believe but not sure if it was Marrickville or at a higher level.

I thought the overall NZ reaction to the Hakarena thing was just further proof of the often thought from up north view that NZ takes it's rugby far too seriously.

It was a marketing ploy, quite clearly aimed at having a bit of fun. Everybody just needed to lighten up a bit and enjoy themselves.

I suspect if that was at the next WC, with having the back-to-back firmly established, maybe it wouldn't have created half the column inches it did.

Now, to completely contradict myself, I don't really care for all the through-the-media talk, never really have. It's a little more interesting than the respect the opposition usual crap, granted, but it's just not for me.
-

I think the Hakarena sits in the same cupboard as those who are offended if you don't pronounce Maori place names correctly...obviously we have had this discussion about the Jaguares where apparently they are happy people try to say the name, whereas in NZ, if you don't say it correctly, some will claim you are disrespectful to the culture.

I didn't think it was amusing, offensive, thought it was just silly, made him look like a fool
-
