I listened to a bit of the radio commentary last night during the last session of play and it was two English fellas (don’t know who they were) and Jeremy Coney.
A lot of discussion about Williamson’s future as captain and they made a lot of good points I thought in favour of him stepping aside or him being displaced.
Here’s a somewhat radical idea, but what about Mitch Jnr? He’s mature, taken a somewhat hard path so has learned plenty of lessons along the way (no not a journey 😉), clearly has good temperament and I think it’s enough of a shift away from the old guard.
With his performance in this series, he would have his test spot in concrete at least for a good while into the future.
He's only been in the side for 5 minutes. From probably not getting a game until Nicholls went out of game 1, to test Cap would be a meteoric rise to say the least. I don't know what is wrong with Kane, is it physical? Is the captaincy affecting his batting? Certainly his preference to stay the course rather than chop and change like McCullum did was a weakness in this series IMHO. Joe Root stepped aside from the captaincy, Kane would need to voluntarily go because I don't think he will be pushed anytime soon
As amazing as Johns son has been is it a sign of things to come or will his form deteriorate as time goes on ?
Let’s not forget Conway did this last year and his figures now are looking decidedly more “normal”

Surely it's now a case of Daryl's Dad rather than John's son
I don’t like talking about John Mitchell so I don’t think I’ll need to use that one

Definitely needs to perform for at least 2 years

Black Caps' selection process not a concern for NZ Cricket boss after whitewash by England
A whitewash should always be a cause for concern!

Covering Kane's arse on the selection debate.

That read like any press release from the E&WCB over the last few years. Problems? What problems?

NZC arguably has a recent history of doing even the right thing the wrong way. E.g. Hesson and McCullum were the right calls and probably set up the last eight years or so, yet the captaincy situation with Ross Taylor still managed to be handled abysmally by the powers-that be at the time...
-
@Donsteppa and the Baz promotion was a bold call at the time and there were a lot of doubters because of what they thought Baz represented etc. It was unorthodox and whilst we didn’t win everything, you’d have to find a hard taskmaster to say it didn’t work out.
That’s why we need another reset of sorts. Something a little left field and not the predictable ‘next man in line’. Because that hasn’t worked in recent memory either.
-
@ACT-Crusader the best players don't always make the best captains. Baz was excellent. Kane has been very disappointing by comparison, a very calm but paint by the numbers leader
-
@nzzp not unlike England. They had Root in there with mixed results, clearly their best test bat in ages and a likeable sort of guy.
But the Stokes move was there to renew and shake it up a bit. He’s a bit different. Not your classical test player.

I read Baz's book when it came out and he talked about the balance between him wanting to attack attack attack, and Hesson who was much more measured in his approach. They worked well together and found a good middle ground. With Kane and Stead the worry was always going to be that we are too conservative and predictable, and that is starting to bite us a bit now. With some all time greats retiring we are a team that really needs to throw caution to the wind a bit more like England are now.
Also, Kane hasn't exactly been putting the test side above his own (understandable) desires for a bigger pay check. When he's always being rested due to his elbow issue, but then plays in the IPL etc, that indicates that mentally he's not quite as focused as he was during the last WTC. I do wonder if he is best to step aside as captain for someone else, but we really don't have many options there at the moment. Latham hasn't exactly been a resounding success...

Yeah and maybe KW is starting the Tendulkar/Ponting/Dravid decline….in their cases they averaged late 50s and dropped to early 50s by going on too long. The Crowe factor ( niggly injury ) is possible too.
Smith and Kohli might be doing the same but fair play to Root in the last few years……I thought he’d dropped well and truly out of the “big four” but of late he has absolutely dominated.

I think part of the idea of appointing McCullum was to imitate that “reset” that NZ cricket seemed to have. It was certainly mentioned a fair bit anyway. Has that worked? Well the early indications would say yes, but it is very early days. Too soon to start dusting off the trophy cabinet that’s for sure.

Absolutely.
England haven’t turned a massive corner, they still have a VERY creaky top order and two absolutely ancient spearheads…..BUT they’ve had some pretty good performances, their world class batsman has fired when ours didn’t and Bairstow has played out of his skin aka Johns son…..difference being he had enough support to get his team to victory.
