@The-Docter do we think Joe Schmidt coming in might help us?

First post here on SF btw. So far not ideal preparation but hopefully the situation can galvanise us. Given the forwards at this stage are in effected, I would go with a backline of;
- A Smith
- B Barrett
- C Clarke
- Q Tupaea
- R Ioane
- S Reece
- J Barrett
Bench:
Fakatava, M’unga, Fainga’anukuPretty decent and plenty of go forward
That's what I think too.
Sadly it's the loose forward mix, lock impact, and props that are the problem!
Agreed. Close running at angles to the ruck, hard quick cleans and Buggy passing to players moving forward at gaps.
Some better field kicking would help too.

@antipodean totally agree
-
@antipodean do they throw a wild card in there with PGS?
-
@antipodean btw, I’m a big A Smith fan, but his box and clearing kick game for Highlanders and ABs last couple of seasons has been poor

@Chris though you can coach defence. You can’t coach a guy to break the line if he doesn’t have the attributes.
No but you can coach how to make space by manipulating the defense to get over the advantage line and create space outside the runners.

Will Jordan won’t be the last to go down with covid in the camp.
The team that runs on the field Saturday may differ from the team named on Thursday. Is that when the team is named? Thanks, I was about to ask.
Yes Named on Thursday.
You do know don't you?

We had a period against the French where we fucking dominated by using our big ball runners like Samisoni up the middle with pick & go's etc before going wide. Got us right back into the game when we were done for all money, and into a position where we should have won. It was so different to the way we had played all season it made me wonder at the time if the players, particularly the forwrds, just shelved the over complicated game plan and took matters into their own hands.
It completely nullified the rush defense as it's extremely difficult to rush up when your forwards are on the back foot, and it showed that we absolutely do have the cattle to win those exchanges with the right tactics.
It's a simple game plan, but extremely difficult to counter even if you know it's coming.

Sounds very similar to lions 1.
That powder was kept so dry

What's less ideal is playing two power wingers.
i reckon that thinking is 5 years out of date
and i would struggle to call many of those blokes "power" wingers. The only power winger is also really good under the high ball.
I think the whole Dagg/Mils, Dagg/Bender, Jane, Jordie etc was more about getting the best players on the field and then having the gameplan that those players with their skill sets could execute.
Henry didn’t mind the Rok/Sivi combo from time to time either.
Didn't that combo lose more than it won? Losses to RSA and France?
I think balance is pretty vital. Players who are big and explosive just aren't going to be able to cover the same ground. Aren't going to be able to get behind the ball to counterattack (as regularly) if they're gassed from the previous play etc

Yep

@Chris I think we both agree. But Reiko is not a punch the line guy. So who’s going to take that part? For me then Caleb Clark sure, and then who else in the backs?
Leicester F could do the job as well.

@The-Docter said in All Blacks v Ireland - 1st Test:
@Chris he is the guy for me and Caleb if fit, that break defences. Then. You play off 9 and 10 and around the ruck with Fukutava, and now you question the rush defence
Yep totally agree I like it I just hope the selectors do.

@The-Docter said in All Blacks v Ireland - 1st Test:
@Chris unfortunately I’m not sure they agree
I fear you are right.
