I think my overall point is that I don't think Foster and co are just using an old pattern and crossing their fingers. They are trying things.
Can you give some examples of what they are trying?
I did in my post.
Not a huge one but we saw a spell where, on defence (and forgive if my memory is failing) the D line was set but moving behind was TJP who would try and pick a charge forward from deep.
I think that the idea was that a normal 'rusher' creates risk of a gap to be exploited but a rusher not in the set line may disrupt or stall the attack pattern with less risk.
I hadn't seen that used as a tactic before and thought it was an interesting experiment.
Discarded or tucked away? I don't know.
Kick-pass was never in Hansen's book except as part of individual flair yet we have seen deliberate calls with inside runners knowing what to do to distract defenders or pull them in.Have they shown wild innovation? Not really. But it's also not fair to say they are just rolling out old patterns as some on here claim.

Midfield - an initial problem is that I don't clearly know who Fozzie thinks are second fives and who are centres. I don't really understand why he went from using 12. ALB; 13. Goodhue in 2019 to 12. Goodhue; 13. ALB in 2020. The former seemed to work significantly better to me. But now we've had 2021 without JG and are having 2022 without ALB; so we're still not learning the full story about Fozzie's plans. Now we've got a bunch of potential 2nd five options, who are either untried or haven't nailed the position; and Rieko and Goodhue who both seem like good options to play centre - but, still have a bit to prove at test level. And maybe Jack is Fozzie's second-five...
I think the only thing you've missed is....(grimace)....they have shown a liking for Ennor at centre. It won't surprise me in the least if they go back to him (even over Ioane). Sad Face.
I fucking hope not. Reiko is both in good form and has Test experience so I think he's nailed on for 13 as he's the safest option. My guess is Fozzie will go for experience and if Goodhue goes OK in SRP, it's be between him and QT for 12 with PUJ poss. as cover.
Is PUJ one of those guys who just gets better and better the more he doesn't play?
Not a crack at you Vic. But he keeps getting mentioned in dispatches but isn't in the top 3 (or is it 4?) midfielders in his Super team.
He made the ABs and didn't look out of place. I'd say he's pretty handy.
So did Charlie Ngatai.
And then ascended into heaven
Lyon? Gastronomic heaven, maybe?

My bad - I got my UJ's confused. meant TUJ. Thomas, being younger, has probably more potential....
What, by a few minutes ?
You really walked into that one didn't you?
Like a cat with a mouse.

Barrett showed tonight he’s the ten to win us another World Cup.
Isn’t a flake on defence, has magic moments, great calmness under pressure and doesn’t go missing when things don’t go his way.
We'll need an effective long and accurate punter in the team, so whether he is at 15 or 12, Jordie is a requirement.
-
Definitely liking the looks of Smith, Beauden, Clarke, RTS, Rieko, Jordan, Jordie at this stage

@Kirwan He had a bad game. Slotting the winning droppie doesn't make him a good 10.
I think your bias is showing again.
Well taken try, excellent defence (rugby is more than just attack) and worked hard to get us in the right parts of the field.
No panic under pressure and wins it after the hooter.
If that’s playing badly, I’ll take it every week and certainly in a World Cup.

That’s my preference too.

John Bitchell and the Hammetteur would have heart attacks seeing all that "flair" in one backline.

Haha, to hell with the safe players man, we're back in the pack now and need a point of difference. Every player in that backline is a threat, let's get them all out there and run fucking rampant.

Not saying he shouldn't play 10 for the ABs; just didn't show it today.
You get back to us when Mo'unga learns how to tackle.
-
@Kirwan Yup, he had a very solid outing. His tactical kicking drove us out of trouble by going high and into the 22 forcing Muirhead to put the ball out to hand posession back to us. He also looks very dangerous taking the line on and topped off the night with a droppie to win it.

I think RTS needs a few more games at SR level under his belt first. Too much of a prospect to risk throwing him into the deep end just yet - an EOYT slot would be a good possibility though.
Think it's Clarke v Reece for the wing slot opposite Jordan. Nice choice for Foster to make.

As a neutral, I thought his game overall was a bit of a curate's egg. Some outstanding moments but also some really, really average stuff. That said, his outstanding stuff came at just the right time and he sealed the win, so yeah, def. a player you want for the big games.

We're going to have to take a punt on someone and he has the most talent of the lot.
Havili - just not up to it, was a stop gap at best, an absolute waste if time starting him there for further tests
Goodhue - classy player but coming back from a long injury and his best performances in black were at 13
Jordie - has loads of potential to be a world class 12, but not a big body of work there at Super level and above, and is established at 15 already
Tupea - young, still developing, has a way to go yetAm I missing anyone? Who would you pick? With ALB out the home tests are a great opportunity to blood someone that has potential to succeed in the position.

I'd go for experience at Test level for the Irish series. which would mean Reiko at 13 and either QT or Goodhue at 12 (depending on how he goes) in the starting line-up. Jordie could provide cover at 12. I'd go for TUJ for a punt in the 23 as he's been playing well.
I think RTS needs to be handled well to get the best out of him and a Test slot at this stage could be a step too far and poss.backfire if he has a 'mare. Hope he will be in the big squad for experience and with a view for a poss. bench slot in later tests and the EOYT.
Agree with Havili. Thought he showed real potential in the Bledisloe, but he seemed to drop off badly after that. Rabbit in headlights stuff at times
