With all due respect, that's horseshit. I'm responding to a fanboi accusing me of trying to start a fight based on completely fair and normal comments. If Crucial can't tolerate those kinds of comments or somehow sees criticism in them then he needs serious help. -

I'm not entirely sure the above is helping out with your that's horseshit comment ...

Maybe crucial is trying to wind you up on purpose (although I can't see how), and he's done a cracking job it. I actually agree with BSG, in that I can see both sides of the discussion. But I can't see anything worth getting wound up about. It's not like we are talking about Occam's Razor (which honestly, I still have NFC about).
-

Fair call.

I'm just perplexed as to how my comments could be construed as an attempt to start an argument. It's nice to have a favourite player but that level of devotion is farking scary. -

Yeah, we all want him in our national team for as long as he's good enough

However worth bearing in mind that not many players sign on (commit) for longer than 4 years and in fact most seem to do 2 year deals - especially those closer to 30 years of age. SBW has done 2 years now and I don't expect the next deal (if there is one) will be longer than 2 years so this "long term commitment" idea is all a bit moot anyway
-

For starters just quit with the fanboi/devotion/etc etc comments. I am simply making a point about a player. Doesn't mean I'd drop my pants for him.

If you can get past that then maybe I mis-construed your original comment (I have already apologised if that is the case)

If you had written 'it would be good to see SBW have a long run with the ABs to see how he would go' then they may make the point you are now claiming.

Instead, saying things like it isn't in his character to do that and implying that he doesn't commit to the same degree that others do is what made me try and argue the opposite.
-

Sheesh, doesn't SBW read the NZ Herald? There's a fucking housing crisis up there, and a Chinaman will cut in at the auction and buy any house his missus has set her heart on. I hope he has at least saved his 20% deposit for a starter home or he and his family will be living in a Datsun 180B on the side of the road by a park.

SBW could just pocket the $5K from Pullya Benefit and move to Huntly. ;)

Good luck to SBW whether he ends up with the Chiefs or Blues. At least it appears he will be staying with rugby.
-

I guess the thing that gets to some people (I don't care personally) is that it seems every 5 minutes there is talk of another contract negotiation and "speculation" about his future. It seems at odds with plenty of other players that have had AB careers, even those that have taken sabbaticals.

You're not simply anything. You're clearly infatuated by the guy. You have to be to find anything remotely critical in my post.

So let me break in down for you:

- It would be nice to see him commit for a decent length of time.

Now notice I wrote "nice" which implies that I would like to see him in black. By decent length of time means more than the EOYT then RWC year. Is that ok? Nothing offensive there I hope.

- But it would be out of character for him to do so.

You somehow appear to have interpreted this as an attack on his good character. I promise you it was not. As I'm sure you are well aware, SBW only signs 1 year contracts and from mid 2012 went to Japan, boxed, played NRL and then returned to union at the end of 2014. He's now going for the Olympics which is not the ABs. Therefore, I think it's very fair to say he does not commit to anything for very long. That isn't criticism or a backhanded compliment, its a fact.

Having gone through that, I cannot for the life of me see where I have criticized the fellow or made any attempt to start an argument.

Maybe, just maybe, you're more than a tad sensitive about any comments about SBW that don't praise him. There's a term for that I believe.
- It would be nice to see him commit for a decent length of time.

-

Well, continual talk of contracts and futures follows on from SBW signing a series of 1-2 year deals. Quite obviously Khoder is at the negotiating table batting for SBW more than if he were representing a guy who signs 3-4 year deals.

With the talk of the new broadcasting deal being double the value of the current one, then SBW is probably poised to cash in on that. Perhaps Khoder held off on signing a long term deal in 2014 because he knew any deal would be more lucrative in 2016. Especially by now Nonu has finished up his [legendary] ABs career and SBW has a family is seeking more stability.

To be clear, these comments are not in the "I hate SBW" camp. I don't love the guy but he's got mad skillz and I want him on my teams (Chiefs and ABs).
-

2 year contracts are pretty standard for NZRU. Longer ones (often still only 3 years) are offered to some key players and sometimes existing contracts are pushed out before they run out effectively making them look longer (eg a contract running out at the end of 2016 is extended to end 2019 and signed in 2015)

Remeber that the NZRU don't 'over-sign' unless they need to as well as the contracts are all locked in for the period. An injured player still gets the term of their contract payed out whether they can play or not.
-

Honestly the only other contract negotiations for a high profile All Black that was remotely close to the same SBWs 3 (?) now contracts have been was Hayman and that was because apparently they were throwing in a dairy farm. The way Nasser conducts business is incredibly out of kilter with all other ABs, very league which is where he is from.

The rest just slip under the mainstream medias radar usually until the guy has great Super form and is gunning for an AB spot but is already commited to a European club.
-

SBW is 31 in August, 34 by RWC 2019. Smith and Nonu were 34 and 33 respectively at the last world cup - so age isn't an issue theoretically.

Be interesting to see how many ABs are able to mount a tilt at three Rugby World Cup winners' medals.

I guess Sam Whitelock is the favourite, since he's still only 27. Owen Franks is 28 and should also last. Mainly a question of serious injuries or enthusiasm that would stop these two.

Sonny Bill and Kieran Read are pretty much the same age and I suppose reasonable shots, though both will be stretching things to Nonu/Conrad/McCaw lengths.

Jerome Kaino is still in the AB frame, but he's 33 now, still 3 years to run and contenders are lining up in his position. A fair sort of outsider.

Probably more likely that Slade or Vito (or an elderly Ben Franks) would come back from overseas and find their way into the 2019 squad - none are very likely.
-

how much of this is Sonny Bill or Khoder though? It's more the media's fault. They know all they need to do is put "SBW" into a title and it'll double the amount of reads, and double the amount of comments.
-
