Still some covid issues with the 2 SI teams, although both seem confident they can field a team. I wonder how the Blues and Chiefs are doing?

I hear the Crusaders atm have 21 players unavailable of their 38 man squad. With the hope a few more will test negative over the next couple of day's.

A Blues update from an article about Caleb Clarke:

The Blues, like their southern mates at the Highlanders and Crusaders, had to take an unscheduled period off last week to deal with a widespread Covid outbreak, but are back in business, with a near full head count on deck at training to plot a second straight crack at the southerners.

“Pretty much everyone is back after their seven-day blocks. We’ve just got a couple out now, but it swept through most of the team,” said Clarke following Tuesday’s hitout.

@chris why can't they test them the day prior and the day of, 2 x negative good to go.

So many instances of household contacts not catching it.

no reason they couldn't that sounds like a good idea to me.

I think, and justifiably, that the coaches think if you can't train during the week you don't play.

@bovidae there are plenty of instances where they leave confirming a team naming until the day before when they have players bracketed.

Plus I'm talking players that have likely tested negative the whole way through, I mean if they test negative, why cant they train also? Again, plenty of examples where players get pulled just prior to kick off when they get an injury.

Frequent testing would surely be a better way than calling games off.

My 16 yr old can go to work at a supermarket if I was positive and they give him a RAT before work.

    @taniwharugby

As the Stuff article says they can:

New Zealand’s Super Rugby franchises have critical worker exemptions, meaning household contacts of positive cases can rejoin the squad if they produce a negative RAT.

The coaches just err on the side of caution for those returning after having covid. Barrett was saying on the TV news he is still not 100%.

that I can understand, but for those that dont, but are 'stood down' due to simply rooming/living with a positive case who test negative.

Some will be less affected also, I think the players will know the impact to thier aerobic capacity, as will the trainers.

I think they are doing essential workers tests, they must have 21 positive, it was mentioned in one of the articles. Pretty close environment, rugby games and Pro teams.

And you don't have to test negative to be free, just 7 days plus asymptomatic - I doubt any one will be playing if they're still coughing and sneezing! Might be tired really, which will bear real problem for teams. A lot of my mates have had minor symptoms but are still unable to really exercise a week or two later

@machpants I've been told that research is showing long covid may have links to not resting enough post recovery too.

Yeah I've read that too, a worry for pro athletes for sure. If it's me, my gaming and TV watching will be legendary!

i was going to say i doubt we can expect them to do anything like special jerseys, too late in the week.....but that actually sounds about right for how NZR does these things, no spectacle around it, no one will have a clue until they run out on the field...and then someone will suggest they should have been available to buy

League have always been better at self promotion than rugby. Rugby have always relied on their on field product being better. They don't give a crap about the supporting entertainment
