Southee these days is a rank #11 somehow still living on distant past glories to bat higher up.
I came to say exactly that.
Last three years Tim averages 9, Wagner averages 25 and Henry (very small sample of course) 39.
And Southee's average must be elevated by that excellent 35 or so in the WTC which proved vital.
That's the frustration, he has a ability to do so much better but just lacks the application and his attitude seems to be grandfathered in from the McCullum "express yourself" era. Even if he just tried to last 20 balls before getting free reign it would make a huge difference.
If you choose the least flattering start point for Tim's last X innings, his streak goes...
8, 4, 10, 2, 6, 0, 11*, 11, 0, 8, 30, 5, 4, 0, 0, 6, 0, 4, 5
With the 30 - as you say - being incredibly valuable!
-
well the curses on here are terrible this morning are entirely ineffective
As I type this, a shot the commentators thought was going over the boundary is caught by a incredible one handed diving catch by Will Young
at least one highlight this morning
-
if Wags could stop getting carted around that would be great
-
terrible session. 92/1 may have properly put a line through us
-
We've taken some ripper catches... that one by Young & a couple of one-handed reflex catches by Blundell behind the sticks.
-
@mariner4life I think we got two didn't we - but, on the money.
I was hoping we'd run through them - something like 40/5 and chasing about 250.
I guess 4th innings scores over 300 - even 350 are a lot more common in recent times (this millennium), but chasing 350+ and winning is still very rare.
-
Well done to the Proteas. That session may have taken any chance of victory away from the Blackcaps - scored at a great rate and only lost 2 wickets. Verreynne still at the crease and even if they get rolled in the next session for 20 or 30 runs, they are in a great position to play attacking bowling.

Anything over 300 is pretty difficult to chase in the last innings of a match... Our openers this time need to show much more patience & better shot selection, don't chase anything that's a bit wide, let them bowl to us then we can work it off middle & leg through gaps etc.
-
We are toast. Our batting without Kane and the recently retired Ross and BJ is a shadow of what it once was, we're not chasing anything about 250 let alone 330+
-
Southee serving some delicious pies at the moment.. 400 lead looking possible
-
Rabada is having a field day, which is embarrassing for our bowlers.
-
Imagine being a bowler and having the field spread for a bloke with no test 50s and an average of 11

although I suspect Wags would somehow get the wicket even if he did concede a few
-
Thoughtless bowling by us with all this short wide crap... with Rabada looking to smash everything we need to get the ball fuller at the stumps to cramp him.

I guess that’s how Matt Henry made them feel last week.

a week is a long time in Test Cricket

Southee allowed him plenty of room to swing his arms over and over again, no wonder he was dragged it was was a terrible spell. Short is fine as long as it is well directed as shown by the ball that got the wicket
Meanwhile Latham is going to also have to deliver to beat his SA batting average x 10 if we are not to cave chasing.
