Southee these days is a rank #11 somehow still living on distant past glories to bat higher up.
I came to say exactly that.
Last three years Tim averages 9, Wagner averages 25 and Henry (very small sample of course) 39.
And Southee's average must be elevated by that excellent 35 or so in the WTC which proved vital.
That's the frustration, he has a ability to do so much better but just lacks the application and his attitude seems to be grandfathered in from the McCullum "express yourself" era. Even if he just tried to last 20 balls before getting free reign it would make a huge difference.

Day 4 shapes up for one of those days that you watch test cricket for. NZ will have to back themselves to have SA all but bowled out in the first session and give their batsman the best part of two sessions to score ~250-270. If SA show some resistance then NZ could be all but out of the game at lunch. Pretty much a carbon copy of the last two India vs SA tests...
With Kane I would say we would be marginally ahead here. 250-270 is just one solid innings by a top order batsman and not a total collapse down the other end. 300+ though would seem unattainable pretty quickly with this line up if Latham and Conway were to go cheaply.

Sorry meant a day and two sessions.
Even though this pitch seems fairly docile I don't think it isn't a road either even mid 200s could be knocked off comfortably on the final day with Maharaj coming into play. We've seen most batsmen have gotten stuck in the mud for long periods.
If we bowl them out shortly after lunch then time won't be an issue we can bat at 2 RPO if needed and not worry about the game getting away.
-
@rotated when we finished 80 behind in the first innings it was strong advantage SA. To win, we'd need to both bowl well and then bat well.
If we let them get over 200, the batting is going from 'bat well' to bat incredibly well with a heroic innings. IF they get 250+, it's getting towards miracle time.
Fun fact; highest chase at Hagley was 201 for Aus, losing only 3 wickets. I don't think the wicket will come into play too much (fingers crossed the rough isn't massive).
Yet another pivotal session. Great fun to watch in terms of entertainment.

It will be a miracle to salvage the game from here. I feel another batting collapse coming
love your work.
There's no way we can roll through the last 5 wickets quickly. Wags is a spent force, and Henry is a one trick pony.

Yeah, I think we're cooked already.
Batting has failed without Kane any time there is any scoreboard pressure.
Will be chasing minimum 300, I'd think.
Quality effort.
I was being genuine.
-
when we ended up only 70 behind them i thought the best thing for us would be to keep the run rate right down and force SA make uncomfortable decisions around runs and times
it's weird to say, but by keeping the RR close to 3 and taking wickets, we might have put ourselves in a tougher spot.
unless of course we run thought them this morning

If you choose the least flattering start point for Tim's last X innings, his streak goes...
8, 4, 10, 2, 6, 0, 11*, 11, 0, 8, 30, 5, 4, 0, 0, 6, 0, 4, 5
With the 30 - as you say - being incredibly valuable!
-
well the curses on here are terrible this morning are entirely ineffective
As I type this, a shot the commentators thought was going over the boundary is caught by a incredible one handed diving catch by Will Young
at least one highlight this morning
-
if Wags could stop getting carted around that would be great
-
terrible session. 92/1 may have properly put a line through us
-
We've taken some ripper catches... that one by Young & a couple of one-handed reflex catches by Blundell behind the sticks.
-
@mariner4life I think we got two didn't we - but, on the money.
I was hoping we'd run through them - something like 40/5 and chasing about 250.
I guess 4th innings scores over 300 - even 350 are a lot more common in recent times (this millennium), but chasing 350+ and winning is still very rare.
