It’s what friends do..
(This twitter thread is incredible, the replies from blue-check Chinese state officials and the sub-threads especially, geezuz what a can o’ worms, careening from Taiwan to Kashmir in a heartbeat!)
The West should stop trading with Russia and China ( now that would be hard ). The real danger here is most likely China. You can see Russians getting rid of Putin and being worked into a functioning Europe. However China is a whole different story.

This one’s a little bit scary, especially if true!!
https://unherd.com/2022/02/putins-spiritual-destiny/
“Many people don’t appreciate the extent to which the invasion of Ukraine is a spiritual quest for him. The Baptism of Rus is the founding event of the formation of the Russian religious psyche, the Russian Orthodox church traces its origins back here. That’s why Putin is not so much interested in a few Russian-leaning districts to the east of Ukraine. His goal, terrifyingly, is Kyev itself.”

@kid-chocolate Putin has been all over countries on Russia’s borders. He is an expansionist. You can’t give in to bullies. Ukraine has done nothing wrong. The “free world” has let it down - not honouring treaties ( Obama ) and trading with Russia, allowing Putin to increase his power. The Economists are mostly to blame. Allowing an elite to gain economic power in Russia with asset sales, following up with austerity policies for the people.

@kid-chocolate I’m not sure how helpful it is to post speculative opinion pieces from the tablet and some random God-botherer from Southwark TBH. Especially when you’ve just said you believe about 10% of what you are hearing.
Maybe we should stick to trying to Ferning rather than trying to giving airtime to the amateur psychologists.

Just to be clear, that’s not what economists do. They’re not gatekeepers or powerbrokers, they’re just social scientists. Politicians make policy, economists don’t.

Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, has agreed to send weapons to Ukraine.
Huge change in German policy on weapons exports that's been in place since 1945.

Then you misunderstood the influence that Neoliberalism has had on politics. It’s an economic ideology ( its not fact ) that is now established in the minds of politicians and media. Of course the Economists are to blame, they developed it and sold it to the world. Just like if I was Scientist that came up with a health supplement that made everyone sick.

It’s a propaganda / information war. I’m sitting on a couch thousands of miles away, don’t know shit except already seeing hoaxes and videographic flimflammery exposed by the hour. Many of those hoaxes and rumours are being reported by major news orgs and repeated by politicians with zero skepticism. I don’t see why we’re supposed to stay in our lanes being spoonfed their bullshit any more than what’s published in The Tablet. The subject header here is “Ukraine.” Why is some speculation more special and/or dangerous for Ferners to read than others? People here have brains, they can absorb information, employ a dose of skepticism, and attempt to figure things out for themselves. How many wars have you lived through where the initial reports from blue-check mainstream sources subsequently turned out to be steaming piles of horseshit? Why/how is this different?

If they don't want to send troops in at least they are okay with tooling the Ukrainians up. I wonder if anyone has sent special forces in on the QT to help?

Oh Jesus. I’m out.

I’ve got no problem with you or anyone else reading as widely as you can. I just think the healthy skepticism you obviously have might be used to filter out some of the fringe stuff. Reverend Giles’ attempts to shoehorn a religious motivation onto the actions of an avowed atheist doesn’t really serve any purpose except to get himself a click or two IMO. The Tablet article is a hot mess of patronising arrogance:
That Ukraine has allowed itself to be used as a pawn against a powerful neighbor is in part the fault of Kyiv’s reckless and corrupt political class. But Ukraine is not a superpower that owes allies and client-states judicious leadership—that’s the role of the United States.
Yeah, let’s make this all about the US, and how its “role” is to lead those weak-minded client states. I’m surprised they didn’t just call it Manifest Destiny.
