His tax cuts created a rise in GDP and the top 10% not only paid more tax they paid a greater proportion of the revenue.
There's a very good argument he created a housing bubble which eventually led to the GFC. He was still better than most, I think.
I think what's tarnished Reagan has been the association with the modern GOP. Well, that and Greenspan
I recall Reagan being subject to as much abuse as Trump from the day he was elected. He just rose above it and disarmed it time after time.
A left-wing opponent (may have been a UK MP) once sent Reagan a publicity still of him holding a chimp in a movie, thinking it a clever publicity stunt. Reagan sent it back signed with the words "I'm the one with the watch". Classy response.

Ronald Reagan speaking in black and white. Pretty insightful and rings true 40 odd years later:
He was branded as stupid by his opponents and many commentators, Read his diaries though, and it's clear he was anything but.

@victor-meldrew I Agree, oh for his calibre of politician nowdays
I have heard some criticism of him for closing mental facilities way back then and the resulting homeless scourge devastating US cities today. But I don't know anything more than that.
Mind you 50 odd years is enough time for someone to rectify that.

A legitimate blind appraisal/ comparison of his speeches and policies versus that of modern politicians would have all but the loony left saying they'd vote for him. History (outside of the pronoun brigade) will be kind to his legacy, as it should.

One day I will reconcile a long held curiosity about criticism of outstanding achievers. They could readily present a long parchment of their achievements, yet some media mediocrity or political hack can expect to be applauded for focusing on a single perceived failure ... an individual who does nothing more than watch those who accomplish many things, and write about their faults. So very many did that to Winston Churchill and to Douglas MacArthur, for example.
Banjo Paterson wrote about this phenomenon long ago:
But all the finest horsemen out, the men to Beat the Band
You'll find amongst the crowd that ride their races in the StandThey expect no level of perfection in their own efforts.
I suppose I should stop wasting time pondering this and simply be selective about the opinions worth reading. 😁😁

I wasn't that old when Reagan was in power. But my child's recollection was that he was reasonably popular. I still remember his speech in Berlin, asking Gorbachev to tear down the wall

Spitting Image loved Ronnie, so did Maggie, and, earlier, the Communist Party.
Here is a summary
Springsteen, not so much.

He preferred to win people over and didn't think too much of divisive politics.
E.g. the Iranians seized US embassy staff and held them hostage when Carter was president and it really damaged his presidency. Reagan came to power promising to wave the big stick and the hostages were released. But Reagan wasn't there to greet the hostages - he asked Jimmy Carter to represent him to show the US was unified on the issue.
How far the US has fallen.

These photos of U.S. Sec State Tony Blinken meeting with Rusk Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva yesterday are incredible.

Tail is wagging the dog really hard right now. Ukraine doesn’t want U.S. diplomats expelled, and E.U. wants to negotiate a peace deal WITHOUT Biden’s state dept. clowns attending. Alas, midterm poll numbers are in freefall, so this is their latest Build Back Better emergency.

It just gets worse....
There's a vacancy coming up on the US Supreme Court and Biden has to nominate someone with a liberal bent. All fine so far.
One of the favourites is Michelle Childs, a judge who hasn't been to Yale or Harvard, is eminently qualified and has support across the political divide - even from Trump allies - for her integrity and intelligence. She's also happens to be black. All good. Rather than the usual divisive shit, the US could get a good Supreme Court Judge who commands respect across the political divide and make the Supreme Court more representative of the US in general. Pretty hard to fuck that one up.
Enter Joe Biden. What does he do? Makes a big thing that his key criteria is the skin colour and sex of his nominee., rather than suitability. The result - 75% of Americans (rightly, IMHO) disagree, which may make the chances of Michelle Childs and the first Black & Female appointee more difficult.
If we thought Trump was a master at making a arse of himself, he's an amateur compared to Biden .

@victor-meldrew that is just plain awful. Tragic that if they just said nothing at all things would likely go sooooo much better.
