@kiwibloke grunt at the scrum or height in a lineout?
True, we've lacked some height in the lineout as well - our lack of a good tight-five has annoyed me for years, I reckon our backs have always had so much flair because they've needed to counter attack heaps as they hardly ever get a decent platform from our forwards... I remember a few years back we finished mid table in the Super Rugby, but scored more tries than any other team in the comp

@kiwibloke That is not likely to change whilst the lover affair with Alex Fidow and, to a lesser extent, Xavier Numia (who is simply a touch too small to be really effective) continues.
Fidow & Numia have very good balls skills - ideally you'd want your prop to have a bit of flair & be good at scrum time... as you say though, they are both a bit small as props & also lack a bit of scrummaging technique, not only do we need good starting props, we also need some depth in that area off the bench.

I doubt Fidow has ever been called small before.
I think Reed Prinsep deserves to have a Hurricanes' contract. He actually put in some good performances last season - he just isn't the most dynamic player, and will never be anything beyond a good stopgap option.

But he's not a stopgap option, he's number 1 on the teamsheet at the Canes.

Season hasn’t started and the canes fans are all over their team.😊
@Nepia doesnt count. 🙂
Looks like Tom Parsons has come in for D Bird. He’s in one of the photos anyway so I assume he’s come into the squad.

Of course I don't, I think it was just poor timing that @Chris post appeared above mine. I hate them with a passion reserved only for @Chris's team.
Good for Parsons if he's got a spot, but still fucking criminal it took an injury for it to happen.
-
@nepia hopefully Parsons gets a chance. Who knows, with the All Black’s potentially out for those early rounds and with a few season ending injuries taking out IWL / Bird, Devery and Parson’s could well be in contention for that first game against the Crusaders.

In terms of quality, I meant. A journeyman. Whatever label you want to attach to it

Agreed - I'm not a fan of Prinsep at all. I would much rather see Flanders and perhaps Howden starting every game. I just think Kiwibloke went a little too far earlier in suggesting he shouldn't be in the squad at all.

I didn't say he is a pigmy reckon he tends to lack a bit of technique at scrum time.
Prinsep as we all know is only a plodder, no wonder the Crusaders got rid of him - waste of time having the bloke in the squad... I want to see a Canes loose forward trio that offers much more, really good pace & ball handling skills etc so they can link up quickly with our backs to keep the momentum going & they're clearly going to do their core roles well too.

Lol Ben May is back in the picture again, not sure if he’s injury cover or simply helping boost the numbers at pre season training. I thought the guy was retired.

May was one of our better scrummaging props... thought he'd retired as well, he must be about 40 now ?

Of course you want that. Everyone always wants the best for their team in every position - but there aren't a whole lot of players like that who are being left out (for the most part). If you want to leave Prinsep out the squad, you've got to pick another player that better fits those ideals, and then weigh up whether those strengths makeup for their relative weaknesses in other areas.

With the huge depth of players NZ have there has to be someone better in the country than him - the bloke just doesn't add anything... this is down to the head coach wanting him, I've talked to lot of people that can't believe he was selected as well.

The problem is a lot of people are essentially looking for a highlights reel player like Ioane or Savea (probably a bad example as they also do grunt work - but they want a player who can run like them) . They don't necessarily notice the grunt work players do. He makes a decent number of tackles, is a lineout option and is reasonably accurate in everything he does - and that can be more valuable. He is never going to be a world beater, but I can understand why a coach might want him in the squad - especially when the other loose forward options are all young guys with no experience (i.e. Howden, Laubscher, Iose).
Though it does become a problem when you have 3 or 4 of these no-frills players and start them all each game, refusing to make any changes, even when it isn't working.
