Also I think he's made the right decision to duck out of the Oz tour. Time to get his head together, recharge the batteries and hopefully come back a wiser man next season.

And hopefully a better scrummager!
-
Read about marler's decision on the guardian site. Was he pushed to take a break perhaps?
Also, the paper pitched the exit as being for the friendly vs Wales and, oh, by the way, as an after though also the three test tour of strata. Seemed oddly written to me. I always hold that paper up as being a fine example of the queen's. -
Really looking forward to the Australia vs England series by the way. Should be the most competitive of the june series. Haven't seen much of this Itoje rooster but looking forward to seeing him mix it up. We won't see him til the lions series.

The Queen's English?

The paper is well known as the Grauniad due to the poor grammar and typos!
-

He was a stand out at U20 level and has been brought on well at Saracens. He has done very well for England so far but it is still early days. His potential is huge but so far he has not really been tested by guys that have had the opportunity to work him out. Not trying to downplay the guy but we have had so many next great things for England that I'm reluctant to big him up too much.

England are well blessed at lock with the current incumbents being Kruis and Itoje, keeping Launchbury on the bench. This is Launchbury who, at the start of the 6N was being touted as a future England captain due to him being nailed on for a starting spot. Then there are Lawes, Parling and Eastwood, all of whom are bloody good. Add into the mix A-W Jones, Charteris, the Gray brothers and Toner and Lions selection is going to be interesting.
-

I am the last person to big up the latest greatest hyped England player, but this guy is the real deal. I watched a few 6N games focussing just on him, and the only other player I have ever seen read a game so well is McCaw. Itoje just pops up everywhere in the right place. I think in a few years he'll be the best player in the world.
-
There is a stack of lock and loose forward talent available for the B&I. It's exciting and a Lions tour is one of the few occasions where I really hope the opposition are at full strength.

End of the day though they can only put so much of that talent on the park. -

I agree. Itoje looks exceptional . The Poms will no doubt screw him up though. Make him add another 20kg of unnecessary muscle and play 45 games a year until he's slow and broken.
-

That woukd be a pity because he looks like England have found a lock version of Michael Jones.

That's down to lazy subeditors though. The prose itself is top notch. The cricket writer mike selvey is exceptional.

We'll see if he is the best second row first.

For years we were hearing how great Courtney Lawes was. He was being compared to Ethzebeth, Retallick etc. Now he can't make the England squad.

With all the hype around Itoje, George Kruis tends to get overlooked. -

Lawes and Launchbury both got a fair bit of hype, but Itoje's has been on a different level really.

He's got all the raw materials, but time will tell whether he lives up to it and carves out an outstanding career. Him and Kruis are certainly the best second row partnership England have had in a while.
