Not at all. But the word has strong slavery connotations for black americans. They would probably rather hear a guy in a movie use the "N" word before referring to a black guy as a monkey. And I am sure the americans don't even realise Adams is polynesian

No it wasnt cringe. Fucks me off that people 'cringe' about non events like this. Just pandering to the social justice warriors... who tell us we should be ashamed or cringe about the latest PC bollox.

Yes, when I said cringe, I meant cringe at how it would be interpreted given his audience, rather than the expression itself.

She's American, she's perpetuating the stereotype brilliantly.

Reminds me of a time I got yarning to a black dude in the bar on the train between LA and San Fran and he told me how he could relate to the plight of the Aboriginals in New Zealand.

He was buying all the piss though so it would have been rude to correct him.

Yeah I get the stereotype type thing but people seem to believe she really thought Wales and NZ were the same or close to each other. To me that was a tongue in cheek comment by her. Maybe I am giving her too much credit, but my experience with Americans is they are not as ignorant about the rest of the world as maybe they once were.

The bloke I had the beers with as entertaining but ignorant as fuck. I met others over there who were heaps more worldly though.

Interesting though, we may mock yanks for being like they are ( I don't know if Electa was having a laugh or not, I suspect not judging by her precious comments earlier ) but get the average kiwi to sit down and name even half the US states and most wouldn't be able to do it I don't reckon.....

maybe not states, but you know that trick you use as a young fulla to not come too fast, by concentrating on something else? I used to try and name all the NFL franchises, starting on the east coast and going west.
