Some buffet balls in the mix, and a soggy outfield in places.

16/0 after 2.1 overs, after being 0/0 after 1. Gill is some player.

Stead certainly has his selectorial moments. A bit like no Southee at the SCG.

there was at least an argument there that he was absolutely cooked, adn getting smoked by the Aussies.

But yeah. He does random at times. No chance he ever wins or gets close to a Test Championship, an ODI title, or a T20 world cup. Noooooo chance at all....

Yep, a top coach who has occasional puzzling selections...

The upshot of no cooked Southee was CdG opening the bowling at a gentle 120kmph on a New Years test at the SCG...

I still feel like Peth was sliding doors on that series. A bit of prep, not picking someone on debut who breaks down, and a smidge of luck for Wags to get Smith, and that's a different game. The nicks and edges that just fell short or clear of fielders was annoying -- but Peak Smith is some player.

Then we just got cooked in the field, and eaten by a pink ball, and never recovered in the series. So disappointing.

I'm not convineced he is a Top coach tbh, I think this team has so many good to top echelon players that his impact is negligible. I think Hesson (and everyone knows I'm not a fan of his) has far more to do with the foundation of this side and Kane and Latham are the drivers behind the commitment to hard graft. Somerville is well past his best by date and seems to have beeen selected because he's a spinner, not because he's actually test level.

I originally typed "good" and should have stuck with it on reflection. Or perhaps "solid". I waver in my thinking on Stead quite a bit, from that Aussie tour - which was hiding behind the couch territory - to getting his hands on the WTC mace and the two limited overs finals I suppose...

Commentators saying India won all 5 tosses on the tour. That's a 1 in 32 chance if the coins are fair.

    If.

I’m kind of sitting here seething we lost the toss. Then I remind myself that Wagner isn’t playing and I get more pissed off.

I genuinely thought we were a realistic chance of winning this.

Thought we might have at least tried Mitchell as a first change. Looks like he might be a 'last over before lunch; choice at this stage...

they eat up our spin. If they're bleeding Jamison, at least we have a left armer offering something differen tto serve up.

Spinners are their bread and butter. If one runs through them it'll be a miracle

First test was a narrow escape. Stead doesn't appear to have learned from it

I am quite depressed about this. I was so looking forward to this all day. Now we have two average spin bowlers on before lunch on day 1. Ugh.

I guess the advantage of Somerville over Wagner is he will help our chances of batting out another draw.

Seems unlikely according to the forecast,

Stead also picked Boult and Guppy for the Super Over in 2019 when they were having shockers, Ferguson bowls that over and NZ would've won. Coach's inane selections costed us our single best (and most likely only...) chance of ever winning a world cup. Stead blew it.
