Getting a red card for that head clash just feel plain wrong, no matter how idiotic the laws are at the moment.
I don't have a problem with that card at all. The issue as I see it is how many views it takes for the TMO and the clown with the whistle as he attempts to justify it to the two nodding imbeciles masquerading as his assistants.
If you need to verbally go through a fucking checklist to arrive at a RC for that tackle, you shouldn't be refereeing at this level.

Could've still won despite the officiating, IMO.
Well I just saw this... And I have questions...
The view from the near sideline shows it clearly went backwards.

To me it didn't clearly go forward on that replay after several goes looking at it, so it is just one of those that is unusual situations.
A lot of refs would have blown the whistle from that position when live.

Certainly. I agree they would and Wales would've been denied a legitimate try because a Brumbies player can't draw and pass adequately.

Haven't seen the game only the video of that Welsh try.
Are we arguing that it went forward? If we're not there's no argument. It's a fair try. Nothing the Welsh bloke did was wrong. He tried to play it backwards, and it went backwards.
It's the power of language that I keep banging on about on here.
Use of "deliberate knock down" has confused the issue and people think it's illegal to knock the ball down, extended to even knocking the ball backwards.
It's a deliberate knock on or forward.
Turinui and Plank describe it well here (although I disagree with "absurd", it's a game if inches and very fine margins though).
-
The knock down try is technically correct. The best kind of correct.
But would obviously have been pulled up by any other ref on any other day. So unlucky I suppose.
The various card decisions/non-decisions. Urgh. Is this what rugby is now? Just a ref wheel of fortune.

So head clashes where the tackler is upright are red cards from now on? Seems like something that gets let go a lot.
That was just weird. If you thought it was reckless, maybe yellow.
I guess starting at red for everything then working down is the problem.

Holy fuck. That stood?
Edit: Saw the other angle, bloody lucky.

did it go backwards? Didn't see it in the clip. Love the confused expression of the player, can I run ref, did I just get a yellow, can I run?

Exciting game, Wales lucky, well played Aus.
Can't believe thay anyone is questioning the red card. Clearly dangerous and poor technique. Absolutely stonewall.
The Tompinks try was also undoubtedly the right decision, but incrediblely flukey for Wales, if it had gone a few inches the other way it would have been a penalty and quite possibly a yellow.
I've had a gutsful of the Aussie commentators (and I'm including Mehrts in that) ragging on the referees for every decision that goes against the Wallabies. Claiming that the Valentini card couldn't have been foul play because there was no intent, and the ref had a "howler" in correctly judging the known down went back. Don't be like South Africa guys.
To be fair the folks in the studio were pretty reasonable (Turanui, Plank and the Wallaroo whose name I didn't catch)

It did, but so close. Incredibly lucky. Ref was the only one who got it right in real time, pretty sure even Tompkins thought it had gone forward, but reacted quickly enough to the ref saying play on

Thanks! Big call from the ref though, imagine if he got it wrong!
