What effect will it have?
I believe the practice of pre-game meetings between referees and teams was stopped because it turned into a shit fight of accusations.
Now this.
My first thought when the video was released, and not watching it but looking at the commentary around it:
"World Cup Champions or World Class Victims?"
World rugby really needs to address this and the larger problem of referee abuse and influencing. There needs to be meaningful sanction or we’ll be heading further down the soccer route.

@kiwimurph classic World Rugby; 6 months later, a consequence.
A ban from a sport that isn't played in the SH during those two months..? Not much of a consequence is it?
also a ban on match-day involvement till September 30 next year.
-
@kiwimurph Even then everything up until the match day. Presumably he can sit in the stands and have a runner passing messages at halftime?
He should just be banned from the sport for five years.

Or sit at home in his underpants with a full comms link into Nienaber 😜

And this is the other problem, right? Nienaber looks like a puppet while Rassie is anywhere near the field. EDIT: or hooked up via FaceTime
Add in the constant invasion of the pitch by support staff - and I noticed the Wallabies Assistant Coaches have been out there a fair bit as well - and you're starting to get into Subbies Competition Rules where coaches can't enter the arena except during half time.
-
@kirwan all teams do it, a point admitted in the ruling.
There is a discussion on "the line", and it moving during the course of tour, which is one of the weaker parts of the decision.
There is a difference between whataboutism and asking for consistency. Whataboutism is about dismissing the argument because you the other person is a hypocrite whose opinion is invalid. Consistency is about defining what the rule is.
-
There’s a big difference to trying to game the referee via the media, and blackmail. RE was found guilty of blackmail, yet get’s this pathetic punishment. It should be a life ban, or very long term. Fucking blackmail!
- threatened a match official that unless a requested meeting took place, he would publish footage containing clips criticising the match official’s performance and then making good on that threat; published or permitted to be published the Erasmus Video containing numerous comments that were either abusive, insulting and/or offensive to match officials;

Thought this was worth sharing:
It's basically workplace bullying but because it's a sport and WR are a pack of limp dick wet rags there is no recourse for Berry.
From this statement and Machpants post above, can't help but think this is not a heavy enough sanction.

@nzzp an open door for whataboutism that I am just going to walk past...
everyone does it, I just don't like it. I'd be very happy if the laws were clear enough that people didn't feel the need to try and influence the ref (I know that's a pipe dream).

@derpus said in 2021 British & Irish Lions tour to SA:
@kirwan He didn't just threaten Berry - he threatened the credibility of the game as a whole. Should be a life ban.
Life ban is probably a bit extreme, but could get behind 3 years and a massive fine for SA Rugby so they keep their coaches in line.

I'm surprised they made that public. I will point out his reputation as an international referee has been damaged by other elements than Rassie's idiotic whining...
-
@antipodean I don't think the quality of refereeing is particularly great across the board. Berry isn't amazing but he's no worse than any of the others.
-
Ok so here is my summary.
- Erasmus comes across as a complete piston wristed gibbon. He tried to gaslight the hearing into believing that he did not "publish" the the video. I won't go into the details but on the totality of the evidence that is clearly bullshit.
He also ends up playing the race card at mitigation stage which is just desperate.
- World rugby is a jokeshop organisation.
We all know teams and refs meet before games and that there are feedback from teams on the performance of referee's performance. What we didn't know was that there is no set protocol managing this process and just some vague conventions.
They leave the poor head referee to kinda wing it with how they interact with teams. In this instance Joel Jutge was way too passive in dealing with the situation as it was unfolding.
The CEO of WR sent a letter (after the video was public) basically saying that yeah teams pressure refs through the media but let's all just be good sports and not take it too far. Imagine being a ref in that structure.

Erasmus had the world at his feet after the world cup. 57-0 to WC winners in 2 years wasn't it, under the first Bok black captain? Thats a status achieved by very few before, in any sport.
I don't understand why he did it. I'd ban him forever. Line in the sand.

Either it is a persecution complex, or his boundaries are drawn in chalk so they can be easily moved when it suits him.
I see this is being made into another instance of anti-SA bias. That WR purposefully left it to several days before playing England. That SA always get the short end of the stick. I know we have some v calm SA posters on here, but there is a growing minority of SA fans that believe the world is against them. Left unchecked, or in this instance inflamed by Erasmus to get an advantage in a single series, this is how we get to McHugh/van Zyl incidents.

They should be ignored. And if Erasmus is one of them, then he should be ignored as well.
