I think in these games we have to focus on structure and keeping it in the forwards. We know we are going to win but Dmac and Mounga trying to dance through a bunch of forwards is pathetic. Throwing it wide and getting stuffed behind the gain line was woeful. We need to learn to graft in the forwards and earn the gain line first. As Mariner said our international game suffers due to Super Rugby style. The coaches failed.
-
It has occurred to me that we are too fucking arrogant for our own good.
Teams fan across the field and tackle our unthreatening ball runners
Do we play close to the ruck and try to drag them in? Do we fuck. Fuck.you, we play with width. We're the All Blacks.
Someone goes against the plan and attacks the fringes, lo and behold...

Weber/Christie, Mo'unga, Reece, DMac.
Too many skippy, little men in the backs - and with Bridge, Ennor and Tupaea - not really any blockbusting runners for them to play off.
-
I have to say the set piece and forwards in general this year has been a real highlight. Plumtree is clearly doing a good job. Apart from lock we have genuine competition in every position which is fantastic. The hookers scored 4 tries, scrum let Finlay score and Ofa setup another. Shows just how woeful the backs were today.
I never played in the backs, so I don't know what goes on out there but from my couch the backs just seem a little disjointed and lacks cohesion and fluidity. Perhaps it shows just how important Smith is to the AB's backline.
One of the worst performances I have seen in a long time with turnovers and penalties conceded absolutely dire. Flush the dunny and move on.

Ref got that one wrong.
Which one?
Think it was a breakdown penalty. But TBF by that stage he was hardly doing anything right.

Ok haven't read the thread and only 70 minutes in. Three things.
-
How is it that everyone in the world can see Ennor isn't an international centre's arsehole, apart from Robertson and Foster?
-
How is it that everyone in the world can see Bridge isn't an international winger's arsehole, apart from Robertson and Foster?
-
Who the fuck is Dixon? Probably the worst ref performance at test level in decades.
Serious question - Has Robertson actually said Ennor is an international centre's arsehole and Bridge is an international winger's arsehole (or words to that effect)?
-
-
I wasted 2 hrs of sleep this morning watching this. The list of players who didn't make a mistake or error would be very short. Outside of Coles, no one enhanced their chances of starting against Ireland.
Worst performed on the field was a toss-up between Ennor and Dickson.
-
Just got back from a great weekend. Saw the thread and the highlights. Can't be bothered watching but I'm entirely unsurprised that certain players were shit.

- Vaa'i my MOTM.
Really? He was quite heavily involved but made a shedload of errors. I am mainly thinking, I hope to hell that Brodie's shoulder is OK or otherwise they've got Barrett or Tuipolotou on a plane.
Christie and Sotutu the best on show for me.
Reading the thread seems I'm swimming against the tide.
Bit of a fan so perhaps had my rose tinted glasses on.
Either that, or you're all wrong and just a bunch of haterz.
-
Vaa'i definitely needs to work on his breakdown entry. Dickson was all over the place policing the breakdown though.

Some one told me off for saying I wasn't staying up to 2am to watch Italy. I'm feeling vindicated, they're a team that ABs always look shit against cos we always play a B team with no combinations and fuck all experience. Shit games every time, just another flush the dunny.
I'm going to watch it now, with a Sunday arvo beer, just got back from the beach.

@chimoaus said in Italy vs All Blacks 2021 NH Tour:
@booboo No he pushed a lot of passes, dropped ball and got pinged for wrong entry, he was busy but not very accurate, much like the entire side.
Vai'i was busy in a Blackadder way, he just wasn't accurate enough. You can't fault his effort though, part of the reason he gave away penalties is he was getting stuck into stuff.

Past tense but also tense with passes.

Yes all the combos were off but at least he tried. I really think we should have had one experienced lock there.

You might need something harder. The first 60-70 minutes were dire, actually the first 20-30 were hilarious (if you hate the ABs or are auditioning for ABs skill coach-going on yesterday I assume the position is vacant).
-
So we're 70 mins in and not one chip. ABs offered no variation on attack, is this a powder dry thing? Otherwise mo'unga needs to resign, there was so much space for a few chips to keep Italy guessing

Bridge was arguably the best midfielder on the field. Oh, he was playing wing was he?
Edit: i actually think (the mighty) Quinn Tupaea is promising, just had a bad day yesterday. -

As soon as Jordie came on you'll see a marked difference...

He's hoofed it far down field but no close cos to compete and turn defence.
Also ref team need a brief on the offside line and what constitutes supporting your own weight. Awful performance by both refs and ABs. Thankfully I could fast forward all the delays and shit
-
Oh one chip by havili after 78 minutes, recovered too. Fucking hell so dumb it took that long
-
@sparky yes I wondered if mine was delayed. I was on Stan.

the bench was all good? I can't remember anyone standing out for the wrong reasons?
We were probably lucky Italy had one gun winger only and only tried running the ball near the end of the game..

You make it sound like the AB coaches don’t do any scouting on their opposition. It would’ve very evident from 6N performances that what they did yesterday was par for course in terms of lack of attack.
-
- Hurricanes supporters will be delighted as Cane looked sluggish and lacking power.
Not sure that lacking power is the right term. Just working his way back.
If the breakdown is going to be reffed like that, then the ABs did ok. Kept it together and broke them down by the end. Some sloppy handling first half aside.

I doubt it, actions speak louder than words though eh 😉 he's the one that started selecting Ennor at centre ahead of an international centre.
He also selects Bridge ahead of 3 other wingers typically...

i think that was indeed what Shag said, they'd concentrate on their own team not the opposition. And Foster is a mini Shag isn't he?
If they did have great scouting of the opposition that didn't seem to help them against the Boks. -
While you could scout Italian players for this game, Crowley was always going to bring something new compared to O'Shea and Smith.
-
I wonder if the ABs were grappaling with hangovers?

If they did have great scouting of the opposition that didn't seem to help them against the Boks. You really think what these international coaches say publicly is what actually happens? Public statements are just part of the PR game. Given the size of the support staff in these teams, of course they are scouting.
I wouldn’t be putting a loss down to poor tactics or even scouting. I thought the tactics against the Boks were okay, we just didn’t execute in key moments and we gave away a dumb penalty at the end.

Heh. I knew at the time of my post I should add "In my naive sober state" but now now I am four sheets to the wind and completely oblivious to any subtlety of criticism I am going to be very frank and say
The AB tactical awareness, and manipulation of other teams has been crap since the 2015 RWC.
There, I said it.Where has this great tactical leveraging happened in recent years? What strategic weaknesses did they (AB coaches) rip open? Against whom?
Perhaps the George Bridge special of running straight into the opposition and flopping at their feet like a lovesick corgi? The kicks straight to the opposition for easy catches, not to wide open space or bombs to the aerially challenged? The loose forward charging of frightened 10s?
Where? When? -
for @bones only.
Tell me Ennor's neck is proportional side-on to front-on?
Caveat: very academic topic now considering his unique catching skills.
