He’s played well, I’ve never disliked him just for being him. He used to do dippy stuff you Uberfans would overlook 😏, he hasn’t been doing that lately and was our best player so of course he got the vote.
Reece is the only guy who will never get a vote from me no matter how well he plays.
How come ?

Yeah whilst Akira did some good things (won a turnover with a ball strip, forced a turnover with defensive lineout pressure, some nice pieces of defence and good maul defence) - his real value is in his ball carrying - without that I think i'd rather look at Cane at 6. Cane showed some ball running ability last season - could use that.
The 8 jersey also remains up for grabs.
Agreed with Jordie, Weber and Ardie as the best 3. Reece 4th. Can't think of anyone for 5th (which sums it up).

I think the last 2 tests show that, when it comes to our back row mix against teams who are very proficient at the breakdown, it has to be an either / or between Ardie and Akira. Both can be effective ball runners, but neither is particularly bothered about securing our own ball on attack.

I'd be more interested in seeing our loose forwards play tighter against an opposition swamping us. Seeing loose forwards positioned for attacking ball which won't come while we can't go forward quick enough in the middle seems to me a waste of resources.

I would have thought it was worth fielding a backrow of Ioane/Papilii/Sotutu at some point. Whitelock as captain (given Savea won't start). These 3 all play for the Blues so they understand their roles. They compliment each other too. Not sure how if Sotutu can play a tighter game, as Ioane would likely be asked to play wider to utilise his ball carrying.
If Ioane doesn't bring his A game in this combination, i'd look to play Blackadder at 6 with Papilii and Sotutu. Either Ioane and Blackadder offer a lineout option. Sotutu at 1.92 also offers an additional lineout option at the tail.

My abiding memory of that game were the diagonal runs near the ruck behind the rush defence. They seemed to work, made metres, and really stressed the Lions.
Thing with a rush is that you have to be super disciplined and fit to keep it up all day. If you get out of sync, or the opposition get fast ball, rush can get you into trouble. But if they are set, the only way through feels like a chip kick ... and that brings the reaction we see every time

Playing off 9, mostly. Given that the 9 normally is Aaron it is a great idea. Even TJ doesn;t fuck up his short passes so much! I really thought they'd put that away for RWC, but nope - never seen again

Hate to use provincialism but it is relevant in this case
. This backrow hasn't won against or was deemed by their coach as not the right options to go against the Crusaders pack. It is talented but very raw. Wouldn't like to go into an important test match with this combo just yet. -

It beggars belief that after doing a pretty good of going forward by pumping the channel between the ruck and the first receiver in that test (and for the earlier parts of the second test) in order to circumvent the rush defence, that tactic has basically never been seen since.

So Akira Ioane and Jordie Barrett are going to be the top two players on the Fern's MoM table after the Rugby Championship. Hats off to them on their hard work on developing themselves and delivering on their potential. Hoping that both can develop further into dominant world-class players and even all-time greats in the next few years.
