I’m thankful my life is not hindered much at all by this. The worst thing for us is delaying having a house on the market cos of the recent lockdown. The very definition of a “first world problem” if ever I saw one.
I took great joy in seeing my folks take my sons ( and their little half siblings ) to the pool today and we all had a cuppa afterwards. I’m not taking things like this for granted when I realise so many of you fellas on here can’t do something as simple and pleasurable as this.
My heart goes out to all you guys who are doing it tough in terms of not being with your families. I wish I could do more than offer a few lame words on an Internet forum.

@gt12 that is the dumbest fucking thing
Indeed. My first thought when I saw that comic was studying Nazi propaganda in 4th form Social Studies.
I'm the first to admit that it's an extremely long bow to draw, and it's a colossal drama queen comment. But there are parallels.

@gt12 yeah my wife last saw her dad 4 years ago, since.then he has had a.scrap with prostate cancer, her mum left 2.weeks before we went into lockdown last year, her sister and her family had been saving to come out at the start of this year (obviously started saving before covid)
So we are lucky we have at least seen them too, is a shit situation all round.

My concern is that our vaccinations will not be used smartly, and that prolonged isolation means we need to start the vax process all over again if the virus moves on too far
Ha ha - you're probably right - clown world

How many of these people may die prematurely due to delayed surgery?

Some surely. Others whose prognosis will be negatively affected by delays

Here's latest from WID
So, if Ireland and Canada would be realistic examples for NZ govt to aim for, western, Anglo-Celtic, etc etc. Assume may max out around 75% of total population. By my maths NZ is 53% of the way to 75% double shot. (about 7,553,000 doses)
Assuming those places have maxed out. Not a given. E,g, Still some rise in first doses showing here in Ireland's trend:
more so than Canada's whihh showing signs of a first dose plateau:

@rapido when I went in to the Economist they actually have NZ twice on that graph once at 65.3 and once at 61...
Here's latest from WID
Is that % of total population or over 12's? Here in Aus we are more focussed on 16+ which to me is more relevant. Australia wide that number is 64% 1st, 39.4% 2nd.
More importantly in NSW we are 76% / 43% and about a month away from hitting 70% double dosed
-
This shows the challenges
Willingness to get vaccinated - admittedly from relatively small samples and only surveyed the over 18's
It appears that in western countries between 1/5 to a 1/4 of the total population will not get vaccinated. For Europe as a whole 15% of the total population is 15 or under. So maybe 12% of the population (kids) are an incubator as they can't be vaccinated and a further 20% will chose not to get jabbed.
As I said it's a small sample size and Aussies results suggest fear is a great motivator, but given what Europe's been through you'd figure anyone categorically against being vaccinated can't be scared into it.
Suggests a lot of jurisdictions have peaked out.

That OWID chart is % of total population.

@voodoo yeah I think they measure it from those eligible, which since 1st September, is everyone 12+
Not on that chart. E.g. Ireland is 90% of over 12s, but 75% total population.

Not to start a fight, and not directed at you personally, but to an extent NZ is saying exactly this. I haven't see a groundswell of pressure on the Government to run hell-for-leather at vaccinating then to open borders as soon as some threshold is reached. Have I missed that?
Got the first bit. Don't think the people of NZ are saying that (anymore at least) and yes I would love to know the number as well. It has been asked many times. Just not answered by government.
Yes there is a groundswell I would say anecdotally. Hit a Vax number and let us out.
There has also been a massive surge in Vax numbers, but nobody says what the target is. So that is socially responsible citizens getting jabbed, not government intervention. TBF at least it is readily available.
Sorry about your situation mate. It sucks, as you know we have been there. The feeling of helplessness is the worst.
