@mariner4life Apologies for rattling your cage it was far from my intent. I feel for your predicament and that of everyone similarly affected. Certainly wasn't meaning to be flippant.
I chose the two quotes because they talk about MIQ not being a long term answer. There is plenty of noise from government sources over here that talks about the need to relax restrictions at the border.
Of course being politicians that's all it is plus the landscape can change very quickly as we have seen.
There is still broad support for a lockdown continuing in the short term - with a sizeable minority who seem happy to lock our border forever so govt pronouncements reflect that . However I expect that support will start to erode pretty quickly once we get to 70 and then 80% vaccinated. That's when the government will have to start having the hard discussion about trading freedoms for (effectively) lives.
Cindy doesn't like having those sorts of dialogues but she is ruled by the opinion polls. I don't think it'll help you guys this coming summer but I'M still hopeful we will open up Q2 22

@dogmeat don't be so flippant and dismissive, i've read it 3 times (the worst was before the edit when they first posted when it said gradual re-opening in 2023)
"opening up" given what he is talking about, what does that look like? Because it still looks a lot like 14 day quarantine for the immediate and not-so-immediate future. Who the fuck has the time to add 14 days to the start of a trip? At cost? That is a pretty significant barrier. Especially for a bloke with two pretty active boys who would hate it. And it's not like you can just book a spot. They gonna open more hotels?
Add in the Qld idiocy and it's 14 days on the way back as well.
Cheery picking the two most positive sounding parts to once again minimise how we are feeling doesn't really help things does it?
Jesus. What?

@dogmeat John Campbell was giving Judith grief this morning when she mentioned 'acceptable deaths'
Thing is, that is a conversation that needs to be had, as @Kirwan said, we have >300 deaths on our roads every year, but people just get on with thier lives, if it isnt one of thier friends/family, it is largely just another statistic, similarly flu deaths, what 500 a year? Why is that acceptable, but not Covid deaths?
If we were 75% vaccinated, what does the modelling say in terms of expected deaths from covid?
0 might be ideal, but 0 is not achievable...unless you are ok with increased strain on mental health, unemployment, divorces etc thats without the fallout to other illnesses getting shunted down the queue, surgeries delayed/cancelled, people not being able to get to Dr in reasonable time, increased cost and delays on imported goods

I know lots of people that think isolation is the play but can't comprehend opening up as an option. But we need to face facts, at some point we have to try and live with it

@canefan yeah I have talked to some that still think like that, and TBF, this time last year was only about the time I had started coming round to the fact this virus aint going away...prior to that I was in the shut the border camp (although knew forever was never actually viable)

Not to start a fight, and not directed at you personally, but to an extent NZ is saying exactly this. I haven't see a groundswell of pressure on the Government to run hell-for-leather at vaccinating then to open borders as soon as some threshold is reached. Have I missed that?

Yep, had that conversation with the wife earlier. This is confirmation that there is no chance I'll see the old lady again, that the kids will see their Nana, As it stands, if she went took the final turn tomorrow, I don't think I'd even try to come home - because it appears impossible to get into or out of MIQ, let alone get a flight that matches the times. At best I'd probably be watching the funeral on zoom from a hotel room rather than at home with my kids.

Mrs CF was talking with a colleague in the US who had a tough time last year. Both parents died from Covid19. Shitty times indeed
-
thats a tough read @voodoo , sorry bro, cant upvote either. You might not be looking for sympathy but i think you will find a fair bit on the fern regardless
-
@voodoo Kia Kaha mate. Real sympathy for your plight.
There was a poll last week which was widely trumpeted as support for the governments elimination strategy - which it was - but it was poorly worded and a bit worthless as you could only choose one option.
Nevertheless if you aggregated the we should open up once we get to 70% and the fuck it open now you got a narrow majority. As I said earlier I think public opinion is nowhere near as cast in stone as the government and most commentators would have us believe and will swing very quickly once we get above 70-80% - the threshold will differ for individuals
This may all have been posted and commented on at the time. I'm old, forgetful and too lazy to go back and check
-
lol with quotes like this your dear leader can do whatever she wants for as long as she wants
"I do fervently hope that there were no cases of Covid-19 in the South Island because what I saw today at the coffee shop truly horrified me. Jacinda would be weeping"
Fuck we wouldn't like to upset mother would we?
