At his age, with a WC 2 years away, he can fuck off and stay here.
Dude, when did you get so angry?
Most of his value comes at Super level, and heโs lucky to be the ABs 23. Why give him a sabbatical?
The first part of your post is straight up bullshit, he was freaking valuable in his last full non injury test series, as @Canes4life notes we missed his impact in 2019.
Secondly, I don't think he's been given a "sabbatical", but if TJP can come back after a trip to Japan then I think DMac has got a reasonable chance of doing it too.
The verbal dexterity you use there is impressive - I agree that in 2018 he was awesome.
That's three years ago and (on reflection) if it is a sabbatical it's probably OK - whether he is that valuable or not could be debated but we would have clarity, so it makes sense. However, if it is not a sabbatical, and he is not re-signing and we have no idea of his intentions next year and beyond, I think it's actually worse.
BTW, I didn't read the article until just now. It's the fern way.
So, assuming that option - he plans to skip a Super season by not re-signing until this time next year (like TJP) or possibly at some indeterminate point (NZ Herald: DMac in talks with Sydney Roosters), how his future All Blacks career will go very much depends on how this season turns out for him.
But if he is leaving and hasn't in good faith indicated that he will re-sign, I wonder whether they'll invest in him? If he hasn't re-signed and hasn't indicated that he will, why should they?
He could even be dropped for the Rugby Championship in such as case.
It may even be that he doesn't see a place tin the environment (except as a bit player), so for all we know he might not even be planning to come back.
So, if it is not a sabbatical (i.e., with his intentions sorted and him re-signed), nobody knows.
I love him, he's the driver of our team, and I love watching him play.
But, the Chiefs would be pretty much fucked for 2022 if he isn't re-signed, and we'd be at ransom for 2023 (and beyond) depending on his demands. No-one would know until this time next year (or some fucking indeterminate point) whether he even wants to return to the Chiefs.
Which is a long way of me saying, if that is the case (i.e. he is going overseas and we have no idea if he intends to return to the Chiefs or not), my immediate position is fuck you very much.
If he re-signs, and shows value, then my position as a Chiefs fan would change.
Of course I understand why he would do it - the money must be amazing, he's had injuries, and his rugby career could go tits up at any time.
But if he doesn't clearly indicate what his plans are (i.e., by signing a contract that starts from this time next year with a commitment to play for the Chiefs for example), then he would also be fucking things up royally for the Chiefs. I'm surprised that no-one here seems to give much of a fuck about that.
With my All Blacks fan cap back on, I imagine that we'll have options available next year at 10 and 15 which will likely preclude him from being able to simply walk back in (ala TJP) to the AB environment, which means he is also likely to have a full year out of that environment too. I don't see how that sets him up to be a member of the 2023 squad, so I don't even get it with that hat on.
We'll see what happens, but I'm happy to stand by my original comment if his intentions are what is stated in that article.
