So it’s the best of three races and I’m pretty sure the riders alternate on who starts on the high side of the track, given the potential advantage of watching from behind. They can use any part of the track, basically cat and mouse style, until the last 200m when it’s a flat out sprint.

    Oh, you watching the Madison.

The riders are required to switch off during the race by means of an exchange. While one member of the team races his partner slowly circles the track above the blue line. When they meet, the racer passes his momentum to his partner via a push or “hand sling” before moving up to the blue line to recover for his/her next effort. Races may be run over a specified number of laps or over a period time. Often, sprints for points are offered as a means of enlivening the action.

It's the weird cycling events which are the only ones I'm ever interested in watching... where proper strategy comes into play... the points races in particular, are fun to watch.
In fact - I think I've watched zero olympics this year, except some of the rugby... but all this talk about the nicely weird cycling events, makes me want to watch.

    That makes butterfly seem logical.

That sounds like one of the ones I'm interested in... but I don't even know how to go about watching it. Do I need Sky or some bullshit?

Women's 10,000m about to start. That's a long distance in what apparently are hot and humid conditions. I already start to sweat by the thought of it.

Edited to add that we have a NZ runner in this race: Camille Buscomb. I have to admit I've never heard of her before. I normally don't follow athletics that much; only Olympic athletics.

I think she’s been running the 5000m for quite a few years before concentrating on the 10K.

The women are dropping like flies in these conditions.
