Big night for French teams with both the men’s volleyball and basketball teams qualifying for the gold medal matches.

I havent seen any official announcements so presume ladies golf will still be contested over the full 4 rounds. They are however going off split tees today so perhaps trying to get through before some weather comes in later in the day. Surely any decision needs to be made before the first group tees off today.
Anyway, Lydia off at 11.42am NZtime along with Jessica Korda
Oh and Gaby 10.59am NZ time and paired with Brook Henderson.

Bermuda unfortunately. At 64k total pop we can't catch them. Still an amazing effort and probably more to come. A top 10 would be incredible.San Marino most medals per capita, 1 per 11000!

Haven't checked this but been told that if you exclude the medal extravaganza that is the swimming us and Aussie are level on medal count.
I always find it confusing that as a country where almost everyone grows up near the sea and swimming every summer and with a reasonably strong surf lifesaving tradition we don't do better in the pool.

We are smarter and concentrate on Olympic sports that allow you to sit down while winning.

The two sets of predictions in this article have worked out pretty well.
A few big surprises and not many fails.

Big result for Aus last night with Ash Moloney taking bronze in the decathlon. We've never won a medal in that event before, so it's an incredible achievement.
It's probably a top five moment of these games for me. Winning gold is nice but it's left field stuff, unexpected stuff like this that is what the games are all about.
Athletics medals should count double or triple, given the width and depth of the talent pool. You're genuinely competing against every nation. It's nice to win in swimming or rowing or kayaking or equestrian or cycling, but those are a rich nations' game.

It was great of his team mate to pace him and help him run the time he did. Completely sacrificed his own result.

Just finished reading this, top boke!
I'm torn on this. I mean, it's an individual sport right, presumably the bloke in 4th didn't have the benefit of a pacer? Cool gesture, but you'd be gutted if you're the other guy
As an aside, how cool is the Walsh video in that article!

I watched the race, and Dubler didn't exactly act as a pacemaker. They weren't together through the whole race. Just a section before Dubler dropped away and left Moloney on his own.
If he paced him the whole way you'd raise an eyebrow, but I suppose the Kenyans/Ethiopians do that all the time in the distance races so it's not really out of the ordinary.

They do it deliberately, to the point one of them is designated not to finish the race. At least Dubler did. Nothing wrong with some encouragement from a mate in my eyes. You still have to physically run the time.

@antipodean Yeah I agree. That's all it was - encouragement. And he deserved the medal.
I saw on Twitter his times across the events, if he did them in the standalone events at the Aussie nationals, would land him first in the 400m final, 3rd in the 100m, javelin and pole vault, 4th in the 110m hurdles and high jump, and 5th in the long jump.
That's just astounding. What an athlete.

Decathletes are mental. The scoring system is interesting too; the world record is a bit over 9000, if you take all the best scores recorded by a decathlete in competition you'd have a score just over 10,000 and if you took the world record in each event you'd be just over 12,000. That doesn't seem like that much of an advantage for a specialist over a guy who has to master 10 events!
