Yeah you’ve mentioned the Phelps thing before and it doesn’t help your argument. Another ridiculously stupid statement.
As I said last year: Phelps has won a single Olympic gold medal where he alone was the fastest over a distance: 200m freestyle. Paavo Nurmi and Carl Lewis are better Olympians.
If I recall correctly you also said that Bradbury’s achievement was greater than anything Phelps ever did. That’s easily the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen on TSF, although the argument that butterfly is equivalent to jogging comes close.
You didn't lose your lollies as much as I expected to that bait. Which surprised me. Butterfly is slower than freestyle over the same distance. So is jogging, Any other analogies I can assist you with?
This has to be a windup. You cant be that stupid.
Great rebuttal. We're done here.
Ok I’ll bite. Bear crawls, hopping on one leg and skipping are slower than running. Ergo they must be jogging right? What awesome logic.
You should probably stop posting if that's your grasp of the topic.
To make this easier for you: Jogging is slower than sprinting. So too is walking. That doesn't mean walking and jogging are the same thing.
That’s exactly what I’m saying. Now apply that to swimming. It’s really not so hard. You can do it.
I’ll make it even easier for you. Butterfly is slower than freestyle. Why? Because it’s a completely different farking stroke. Not because it’s just a slower freestyle. Comparing it to jogging is absolutely absurd.
You're either deliberately missing the point or really fucking stupid.
Delightful.
And accurate.
See above. Seriously man. How hard is it to understand? Butterfly and freestyle are not the equivalent to running and jogging. If you are still arguing that then you need your head examined.
Once again rancid demonstrates his complete ignorance of analogy and ignores the point.
Once again you lead with your face and instead of getting out while you can you double down on the stupid. Again a discussion with Antipodean has taken a turn for the surreal.
Everyone else has the cognitive ability to understand that the analogy for running events was to demonstrate that there's no abundance of medals for doing the same distance slower.
And anyone with a brain would realise that it’s a terrible analogy to compare different swimming strokes to jogging and running. That’s my issue. Seriously, how hard is that for you to understand?
I understand perfectly that you're busy flailing away at your own straw man.
What straw man? It’s really simple. Jogging is a terrible analogy. Yes butterfly is slower than freestyle but it is not the same as comparing jogging with running. Jogging is just the slower version of exactly the same thing, i.e. running. Butterfly is slower than freestyle but it’s an incredibly difficult stroke to master and is murder on the body. Again, comparing it to jogging is just simply ridiculous. A better analogy would be Olympic walking. I really don’t understand why this is so difficult for you to grasp.
Mate, time to let it go. You're clinging to technicalities to argue the sensible point that it's dumb to make the same race a bit harder but telling competitors they have to go backwards or move both arms at the same time or not break the water. Whether it looks like walking, running or skipping, it's pretty hard to argue that it deserves a medal. And the same goes for the Athletics equivalents obviously.
It's annoying that these swimmers have suitcases full of gold medals yet someone like Michael Johnson has 3.
If you’d actually read what I’ve written, I’m sympathetic towards the argument of too many events. I simply said that jogging was a crap analogy. I think that’s a very fair point but for whatever reason it seems impossible for some to grasp.
I read it all, good ferning entertainment! Just don't know where you get the energy to keep fighting the pedantic point when you are sympathetic to the actual argument!

Because they are insulting each other and the energy comes from the suspense of who will spit the dummy first and walk away, perhaps?

ps I don't get why skiing is in the Olympics. Or curling, really. Probably some clever Nordic or Canadian woman's idea to get men to practise sweeping.
-
On that list above striking events, I actually quite like the steeplechase. It invokes images of some ancient african hunter dude chasing a wounded animal for a few k, leaping over streams and over rocks. Or a petty handbag thief running from the coppers maybe.
Either way I quite like it.

It doesn't have to be the fucking same. No one but you is arguing butterfly is a technically difficult stroke and energy sapping. It's uncontested. That's your straw man. The point is same distance slower, hence why it was mentioned jogging the same distance instead of sprinting. Analogies don't have to match in every aspect, just the commonality.

Decathlon (Men)
Heptathlon (Women)The fact that the 100m champions are lauded more than the Decathlon and Heptathlon champions has always baffled me
There is no better measure to determine who is the superior athlete
It’s the embodiment of the Olympic motto
Hendriatis Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter
Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together
The superior all round athlete or the one best at something?

Perhaps I wasn't clear. Let's look at it a different way; the superior athlete would surely take part in a wider range of events, or do triathlon etc. The communiter addition isn't about doing more events.

Yeah, wasn't implying you did, was agreeing with you! Trying to anyway. I reckon it's madness to diminish the person who is dominant over a range of events, on the proviso that the events are chosen carefully, which I think they are

Olympics can have overall endurance/general excellence and speciality/expertise IMO. Where I'd put a question is having something like swimming where you can recover in time for multiple events much more easily than say the marathon combined with sprints, and I'd also question sports where the ultimate competition isn't at the Olympics (such as football and tennis, and, sigh, rugby sevens I guess).

A straw man is a form of argument and an informal fallacy of having the impression of refuting an argument, whereas the proper idea of the argument under discussion was not addressed or properly refuted. One who engages in this fallacy is said to be "attacking a straw man".
Since I need to explain this:
- The proper idea was medals for doing the same distance slower.
- You didn't adddress this, instead argued that comparing "jogging" with "butterfly" was stupid.

So what's the positive argument for having all four strokes in the Olympics? I'm fairly neutral about it, my general position is that more events good because I get to watch more Olympics, but it's annoying to see Phelps get talked up purely based on medal count when it's clearly easier to win eight medals as a swimmer than it is as a runner. (Phelps is a great, but I see his 8 as equivalent to Bolt's three and probably behind Lewis and Owens doing the long jump/sprint double) You seem to have a pretty strong view that they definitely belong so curious to hear your perspective.
It’s easier but not easy. Phelps was an absolute freak. There is some crossover between butterfly and freestyle but breaststrokers and backstrokers are completely different species. Take my son for example. He won a swimming scholarship as a breaststroker but absolutely sucks at freestyle. Phelps was different because he dominated medleys, which is unheard of. His medal tally was also helped by US relay dominance. I’m assuming at least half of his medals were from relays.
I love swimming so am happy for the many events but I totally get the hate about too many events. I don’t know how it happened and it is unfair but what can you do. You could say the same about cross country skiing at the Winter Olympics.
Cheers, appreciate the insight from someone who knows more about the sport than me!
