triple jump
Basicaly who the fuck knows? It jsut happened
Historical sources on the ancient Olympic Games occasionally mention jumps of 15 meters or more. This led sports historians to conclude that these must have been a series of jumps, thus providing the basis for the triple jump.[2] However, there is no evidence for the triple jump being included in the ancient Olympic Games, and it is possible that the recorded extraordinary distances are due to artistic license of the authors of victory poems, rather than attempts to report accurate results.[3]
The triple jump was a part of the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens, although at the time it consisted of two hops on the same foot and then a jump.[4] In fact, the first modern Olympic champion, James Connolly, was a triple jumper. Early Olympics also included the standing triple jump, although this has since been removed from the Olympic program and is rarely performed in competition today. The women's triple jump was introduced into the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.[5]

Actually there is some cool hostory around events, poles were left next to streams etc in Nth Europe, so that's where pole vault came from. Originally included distance, which is still competed in Holland - looks well cool!
It's a traditional sport in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands (not Holland!). It's called fierljeppen.

Is that Mark Watson obsessing on and on and on about the Australian result in the canoe slalom in commentary?
He did a bloody good job until then. Was a big difference having a commentator that had done their homework and was able to think on their feet.
The general feed commentary has been rubbish (that includes TJ) -

Likewise all the swimming events mandate a style.
Freestyle?
I had thought that they had rules around permitted strokes in freestyle, but it's only in the medley, and then only 'must not be backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly' so fair cop on that one.

Great morning for GB
Silver in Men's Triathlon
Gold in swimming; diving; mtn bikingSilver or Gold on the way in Women's Taekwando
I thought Tom Daly had retired. That’s terrific that he finally won gold. Remember him as a 14 year old at the 2008 Olympics.
Another shit medal.
What’s shit about it?
Synchronised. Even more pathetic than normal subjective crap.
Not everyone’s cup of tea perhaps but pathetic seems rather harsh.
It may be harsh given they no doubt put in a tremendous amount of effort, but I'm still wedded to the Olympic motto whereas these days the Olympics appear to be trending towards the "participation medal" end of the spectrum.
Thankfully we’re still a long way from medals being awarded for participation. The best on the day wins. I get some of the criticism against judged sports but I tend to give diving some slack. I guess because they’re great athletes (not some greasy dude in a suit with a rabbit in his mit) performing insanely hard athletic feats.
I don't. They're not even gymnasts, who I don't think should be in the Olympics either.
Not even gymnasts? Who ever made that claim?
What claim, that they're not gymnasts? Clearly the person you quoted.
What does that even mean? What is the relevance? They’re not even gymnasts? Are divers try hard gymnasts? Failed gymnasts that traded in the parallel bars for a 10m platform?
At least gymnasts have to fight gravity to do somersaults and twists.
Umm

The general feed commentary has been rubbish (that includes TJ)It's rare that someone winning a bronze medal can be made to sound like they'd abjectly failed - and for it to be repeated ad nauseum. We changed the channel in the end...

2800 cases reported in Tokyo today according to the WSJ (Japan Times said 3000 earlier).
It's not clear how many of those are related to the Olympics, but I imagine we are going to have a long lockdown coming - I wonder whether the government will have the balls to make things stricter in Tokyo. during the Olympics...

luka jones qualifies in 5th for final in an hour in the kayak slalom
not bad as she made some errors.
all racing for 2nd the Aussie who qualified in 1st looks to be on a different level
It is not unheard of for an Australia craft crack up and sink when under big pressure.
she looks like a stone cold killer.
As predicted by some on this thread, the Aussie girl choked big time in the final. Unfortunately our girl wasn't in a position to be able to profit from it

Not to defend the commentary, but between her and her parents, they've won 28 world championship titles - to go with 1 silver and 2 bronzes at the Olympics....

Belgium playing the house down in the basketball and their two very good WNBA players Julie Allemand and Emma Messeman have been killing it. Aussie Opals get a loss first up.
