@machpants FOOTball (sorry, pet peeve).
Association football, or Soccer. As opposed to any other form of football.
I really hate it when people try and claim "football" is the exclusive name of one type of football.
Very English centric.
And awesome result for the Olywhites Soccer team!!!

A Burnleyesque win there. Reid was immense.
Now NZ needs to get another win.
Is that our first ever All Whites win in a major tournament?
We made the knockout round in U-19s in 2019 plus last 16 in U-20s in 2015

Going full derailment on the thread (sorry @Stargazer), my Oxford English Dictionary defines 'football' as describing the main code in the country of origin.
The examples include, football in UK = association football/soccer. USA = american football. NZ = Rugby Union. Pretty sure (from memory) that AUS = Aussie Rules.
Edit: I looked it up a few years ago when having a discussion with someone ... basically I'm an anorak on the internet

If by some miracle the Games make it through to the end i would expect to see events where only 2 or 3 competitors line up.
Can imagine the 100m Mens final with just 3 in the final, the rest are isolating as either covid positive or close contacts.Team events where games are won by default as the other team has had to pull out.
Its barely begun and the number of cases are piling up.

Watching the Opening Ceremony, it’s actually quite sad. Sad for the Japanese people that they don’t get to experience this at the stadium and all the atmosphere that usually comes with it.

@act-crusader I agree. The lack of a crowd also affects the acoustics. It just isn't the same watching something like this on tv.

I just found out the Olympics has 3-on-3 basketball. This festival has jumped the shark. They're not even trying to hide that it's about money and fuck all else

It's been reduced to a TV sports variety show for some time. When are they having ballroom dancing or skateboarding?

@canefan Skateboarding is already there. The addition of other "sports" has made the Olympic Games a joke. Next up Chess and Mahjong.
They are constantly chasing viewers in an increasingly diverse market. The influence of the X games on the Winter Olympics is very significant. I will not be switching on to watch these niche sports, they don't feel Olympic to me

Me either. I am very selective in what I watch. Agree about the X Games influence, which doesn't interest me at all.
We've also now got surfing and sport climbing.

Just watched the replay of the Olywhites vs South Korea. We played pretty well, solid at the back just lacking a little precision up front, and our midfield grew in confidence. I don't think the Koreans offered that much and struggled to deal with our physicality, they weren't able to sell the ref with their soft falling down. Reid was massive organising the back and the goal from Wood was nicely taken. He showed his EPL class with the two touch finish
