You do have to wonder how penalty shoot outs have got into the England psyche.
7 and 0 in knockout tournaments. Some of the fans may be dickheads (we've all got them) but that is actually a likeable team and it must be tough to take.
Absolutely, but thankfully most dickhead fans are keyboard warriors. England take it to the absolute worst level.
I would absolutely hate to be a cafe/bar owner in any European town when England are there to play an important game. Win, lose or draw you can pretty much guarantee your establishment is in severe danger of being fucked up.

Soccer fans prefer to do it themselves.

@mn5 It's a really a very small minority of diehard fucktards who persist with this fluffybunny ish behaviour.
It can spiral very quickly but fortunately in the majority of instances bar owners will merely be counting their profits.
Much improved from the 80's but still appalling and appallingly predictable
-
@snowy It's actually 7-3 but take your point.
Yeah my bad, but as you said point remains. They aren't very good at it.
I think the Dutch are even worse. I don’t think the Germans have lost one since 1976. Beaten by the Czechs who I think also have an impressive record in penalties.

Shit. No wonder they keep winning tournaments.
I do question a game that just has to have so many tie breakers, but my thoughts on soccer are well known.

Yep I’m sure it is a small minority overall but shit they leave a bad impression. Feral pack mentality at it’s absolute worst.

For the worlds most popular sport ( and none of us can deny that ) it has a lot of flaws as a game…..the main one for me being ( unlike Rugby ) you can’t go from losing to winning in the space of one score…..it has to be an equaliser and THEN the winner.

Mostly not having a winner at the end of so many matches seems to be a bit of a flaw in a "contest". A bit of a participation sport, show up, draw. Everybody (or nobody) is happy.
I am going to cop it for that.

Not from me you won’t. At it’s absolute best it can be a beautiful game but that, plus the constant diving take away from it…..
I guess I’m not a huge fan for the same reason some people aren’t fans of test cricket. However cricket teams have changed their mentality in the last few years and meaningless draws are much rarer. I can’t see the same happening with football.

I love the drama of penalty shootouts but they are a really shit way of deciding a game. You also hear of teams playing for penalties which is even more shit. What happened to golden goal? Too innovative?

Golden goal with no time limit would be cool, just keep playing until someone scores. Though the way some teams play we may end up with a 5 hour game!

My first thread 20 years ago - "Why I hate poofball". I could have used a better title, but it ended up at about 78 pages (yes, pages back then) Not "test ignore status but a good first attempt.
Yes about cricket. We grew up in an age where a draw was more the norm. Not so much now.

Oh and this re shoot outs.
Golden goal? A four hour soccer match with players all having a nap out there? They lie down enough already.

That was used in the early 2000s. France beat Italy in the 2000 Euro final with a golden goal. Last used at the 2002 WC.
I'm sure time constraints were the reason it was discontinued.
