All Blacks v Tonga

@no-quarter Tend to agree with the sentiment. That loss to the Argies and the one against a very depleted Aussie side were really poor performances. I think people have either forgotten or written them off as a COVID-influenced thing.
-
To me the lack of excitement comes purely down to the opposition.
I'm no Foster fan but i'm interested to see what changes happen this year compared to the ABs last year. I'm excited to see how Havili goes at 12, the loose forward battle, the battle for the 10 shirt etc. There were some positive signs in the ABs final performance of the year last year - can they build on that or not.
The problem is the game against Tonga will teach us nothing about the above questions. I commend Samoa for not playing ABs but instead play Maori ABs.
Hopefully the match helps Tonga's preparation for their qualifier vs Samoa but I get the sense it will do more harm than good (injuries etc).
Hopefully Fiji are stronger - on paper it seems that way.

@stargazer must admit my interest level is very low given the state of the Ikale Tahi team that will be running out against the All Blacks on Saturday..It has the potential to be a cricket score
And I can't see anything meaningful to come out of it. The opposition won't be good enough to maintain structure that the ABs may be working on and we're not going to learn anything about the players selected unless they have a mare.

Isn't anyone wondering when the team will be named?
Geez on most things you have the detail, but have missed a whole day in lockdown? Isnt it still Wednesday lol ?
either way must be time to find some sauce
-
@bayimports Dude, it's about the team naming. That's on Thursday. Always is, unless the ABs are playing on another day than Saturday.

Just imagine Foster's game plan and coaching being so shit that the AB's DON'T put a cricket score on Tonga ...
Now that might be a way to get him fired! Without that, I'm pretty sure his contract extension until 2023 is already a done deal!
Even with him in charge of the coaching the opening partnership should still exceed one hundred without loss before stumps. Without Foster that mark would probably be reached by the lunch break.

Fozzie and the boys may as well try and break the record, is it still 102-0 ?
145-17, or Oz got 142-0, that'll be challenging
Was just referring to their best ever against Tonga, lets not get carried away. In saying that I’m sure Bridge will run in a few Caleb Ralph specials and get selected for the big games.
-
@taniwharugby Is Frizell fit again? I mentioned when the AB squad was announced that Plumtree said he liked Jacobson as a 6.

Tonga have named their squad for the test against the All Blacks:
Some big names there…..I’ve never heard of any of them but their names are big.

Yes it is. That was the game in Albany in 2002 which was shown on Sky Sport 1 earlier this week. Other scores that I can recall are
2019 NZ 92 - 07 Tonga (NZ played with 14 for the last 15 mins)
2003 NZ 91 - 07 Tonga
2011 NZ 41 - 10 Tonga
2015 NZ 49 - 07 Tonga -

ABs also played Tonga in the 99 RWC (45-9 ABs). I remember there being a lot of borderline tackles (even for those days) by the Tongans that day who were looking to unsettle Jonah and co.
