Cricket 2021: NZ in England and WTC Final

Watling the keeper is still excellent. I'd had an impression from last summer and scores in ND games that Watling the batsman hasn't quite been his usual rescuing batsman self lately, possibly since his double ton v England at Bay Oval in 2019. I've finally bothered to check some recent stats:
And Tests by year:
Ideally he won't be needed with the bat tonight, but hopefully it's a fitting farewell for the understated legend if he is required.

Perhaps the major issue with the commentary is that they never bloody shut up!
They call it like it's rugby with no dead air allowed.Cricket is enhanced when they shut up and let the pictures do the talking leaving us to make sense and build suspense in our own heads.
Bumble and Gower would often go a whole over without talking, simply because there was nothing worthwhile to add.

I just think India is better in general with dealing those nerves than we are.
I guess you've got to have a special sort of personality to deal with the expectations of a billion Indians watching you.
They've doubtless got shedloads of highly talented players at home, who couldn't sleep for a week when they got their big chance.

Yeah, they keep bringing up random tests from the past as well. The test has been utterly engrossing, I couldn't turn it off last night, and yet the comms start wanking on about a triple century Davey Dumb scored God knows when, flashing up the scorecard etc. It feels like someone decided this would be a great chance to advertise test cricket by bringing up games from the past? When the best advertisement is actually focusing on providing a detailed analysis of the two best teams in the world going hammer and tong in the final.

A good list to be part of - from Wisden:
The only players with more Test sixes than Tim Southee:
McCullum
Gilchrist
Gayle
Kallis
Sehwag
Lara
Cairns
Richards
Flintoff
Hayden
Misbah
Pietersen
Stokes
Dhoni
Anyone feel like building a "sixes rate" table? Sixes per 100 balls faced? I'm too busy at the moment sorry

That's brilliant - were the rest even trying?

Its almost as though Southee was after a record he could own, now if I extended the list to include more six hitters then of course Shahid Afridi would join Southee, but that was too much effort
what the hell...

Hitting that many sixes is so irresponsible at test level.
( I’m amazed no one has griped about his batting so thought I’d better get in there )

Afridi was always too safe a batsman.

May as well keep the subject going til the day starts…..
I’m shocked Beefy Botham isn’t there. I remember highlights of him smoking some huge sixes ( and remember it was a lot tougher with bigger boundaries and less meaty bats in his day ).
Not surprised his mate Viv is there though.
EDIT: cricinfo has Beefy with 67 sixes out of 8565 balls faced, he just misses out.
Some old timer from back in the day only managed to hit six in his entire career. Bradman or someone, he must have been shit.

@mn5 Bradman was a disciple of hitting the ball along the ground and his technique was to turn his wrists accordingly. Tried to take the outfield catch away from the equation.
Absolutely. I’m fairly sure I read somewhere that he still managed to score pretty quickly while virtually never hitting it in the air.

Geees 1 day to play in the world test final and if I was Kane I'd try have a quick chat to Kohli and see if he's up to try get a result and find a winner
Tell him India can bat through to tea (assuming they make it that far) and then declare. In return the black caos will have a crack at whatever they can muster - and take it right to thru to dark too. If no declaration then kohli obviously is happy with a draw, so I wouldnt even come back after tea if no declaration

It’s a tough one alright but getting a result ( and I think both teams are too skilled and experienced to have any major fuck ups ) looks so unlikely. India will have to bat bloody quickly to get close to a defendable total and then what ? Are their bowlers as tired as some claim ?
