Cricket 2021: NZ in England and WTC Final

Awesome that we managed to knock the top off India, Southee coming to the party. All pressure is now on India, we just have to bowl consistent lines and see what happens. Either India play for the draw (will NOT be popular) or they risk it all to try and set us something they can defend. Going to be a great final day.

Southee did more than what was asked of him. Good man.
Was a bit like Timmy of old. Feels like a long time since we've seen him successfully play that sort of innings
14 months since his last 6 in test cricket, according to Final Word.
-
I switched off the coverage after we were 5 down and only checked cricinfo to see Kylo hit a 6 then go out. At that point my stress levels were through the roof so played safe and went to bed. Woke up to see Timmeh did all he could be asked and a bit more. Gutted for Kane but that 49 was worth more - and we did bat time as well. I'll take that 32 run lead every day.
I had noted a few very clear comments from the croud during the early part of the days play...not surprised to hear that some got ejected. At least one comment (not in English) was definitely abusive.

Even if they play defensive they will find it tough if our bowlers are on song. The pitch still has juice and I'm not sure they have it comes naturally to block us out for the whole day. Kyle's bounce and Wags' bouncer game may be the x factors

You hear what you want to hear. Nasser and Sangakarra along others were very complimentary of our batsmen, and Bishop of Kylo especially. Whatever triggers you I guess
Well I heard that.
I've been mainly listening to the NZ radio commentary with the TV on, but the commentary I've listened to has been very balanced regarding Kane.
They mentions his weaknesses (like being a glory hound for fifties apparently) as much as his obvious strengths (he is friendly with and respects Kholi and is a humble loser in big matches).

I didn't hear the glory hound comment. That is clearly bogus and certainly from Gavaskar its a bit rich

Still infuriated with the fucking neutral coverage. If you just listened to the comm's an never heard the score, you'd currently estimate India at 650/10, and NZ all out for 125 in the easiest possible batting conditions. The magnificence of Kohli's captaincy and Shami's bowling what has given India such a powerful position given that NZ were batting on a concrete pitch in summer heat with no humidity.
Well what do you expect when we have selfish captain who was playing for his fifty according to Gavaskar?

I haven't really noticed it, at all. But, I have done many years of training under Channel 9 commentary teams, when we were shit...
Has seemed to me that everyone is being talked up as being pretty bloody good - and I'm reminded of something BMac said in his book about being a cricketer in India. You are basically a god, so can never be dismissed by a poor shot - only by brilliant bowling or an astounding catch!

Tomorrow morning is going to be massive. If we can dislodge 3 or more of them for not much it will be red alert for India. Even if they survive, we showed in the first innings that we have the ability to knock a bunch of them out in a hurry. It feels like we are the only ones with a chance to win now, I just can't see India having the time to post a competitive chasing target and bowl us out
This will be a big morning depending on how much either side wants a result. Wickets important for us, but ultimately with this pitch playing the way it is, if anyone comes in for India and scores quick runs in an unorthodox fashion then, I think they would back themselves to bowl at us too. We all know they have players that can do that too.
It just doesn't seem like the type of pitch you can just hang in there and block for time.

That was odd, he was trying to up the scoring rate and the ball was there to punch through the covers. It just seamed and bounced a bit. It's not like he played a reckless shot trying to get his 50.

TAB is saying Draw $1.18, NZ $5, India $17.
Seems reasonable.
India can't afford to force the pace at all in the first session, so I reckon their lead will be no more than 100 at lunch. If thing go well for them they could maybe be 200 ahead by tea. I'm not sure Virat would allow us a shot at getting that in 40 overs.
Best chance for us losing is probably if India gets bowled out 150 ahead and we fall in a heap chasing.
But, with sun on the pitch and their seamers a bit tired, I can't see things being as difficult as they were last night.
Our path to victory - blast out Pujara, Kohli and Rahane early. Pant will give you a chance - as probably will Jadeja and Ashwin - and their last three wickets shouldn't hurt us too much.

To me there's only two results on the table - draw and NZ win.
I still think a NZ collapse (again) is possible. I don't think India need a huge total either, we are our own worst enemy under pressure.
-
@bayimports don't forget in that scenario India would also be under pressure.

oh I am not, I just think India is better in general with dealing those nerves than we are. Don't think for one minute I want to see it happen, but it wouldn't completely surprise me if it did.

Looking at our first innings batting card, two down looks at risk of triggering a collapse to expose the tail to Ashwin and Jadeja...
-
@bayimports It's not impossible, but probably going to need 18 wickets to fall in a day.
Wouldn't surprise me if batting gets progressively easier tomorrow and is at its best for the test.
I think India's best chance of winning was to knock Little Kane over in the first session yesterday - certainly, I was at my most worried when they skittled BJ.
If they'd mopped us up quickly and, say, 60 behind, India could be a long way ahead by now.

Watling the keeper is still excellent. I'd had an impression from last summer and scores in ND games that Watling the batsman hasn't quite been his usual rescuing batsman self lately, possibly since his double ton v England at Bay Oval in 2019. I've finally bothered to check some recent stats:
And Tests by year:
Ideally he won't be needed with the bat tonight, but hopefully it's a fitting farewell for the understated legend if he is required.
