What are we expecting in terms of medals in Tokyo? Likely and potential medallists?

A few off the top of my head - rugby 7s, Pendergast and Gowler in the rowing pairs, Val Adams will be back so anything is possible there, Lisa Carrington in the canoe.

She needs to sort out her Achilles tendon problem, otherwise her career is over.

there goes about 95% of the hotness from the NZ Olympic team.

If it likely turns to a giant covid poo, i can help feeling those who missed out will feel they dodged a bullet..

Will, you only need to see the design of the athlete’s village to see that the chance of things getting out of hand is highly likely. The whole thing was built pre-COVID and hasn’t had much of a re-fit for a COVID Olympics.

they are also handing out tens of thousands of condoms, but not to use at the games...rather to be used when they got back home..

    riiiiight!

Surely everyone will be vaccinated so that should address those concerns

Didnt someone on the Ugandan team just turn up and test positive? And apparently they were fully vaccinated and tested negative before they left for Japan.

You only have to look at how the IPL in India went to see what the likely outcome at Tokyo will be.
Except its on a much bigger grander scale.

@jk They must have plenty of money in the kitty if they can send afford to send their team to Japan at least four and a half weeks (counting from today) before the games start.

    It's not required.

They say it will be a bubble, but there are just too many staff and too many interactions to keep it that way.

Many volunteers (about 10,000 of the 80,000) have quit due to the lack of planning/preparation/disagreement with holding the games.

I find it hard to believe that medical and pandemic infrastructure and capabilities are the same in Tokyo as Goa or Utter Pradesh!

The IOC are meant to have put a rule in place that the athletes can only be in the village 5 days before competing and must leave within 48 h of your event finishing. This will mean a lot of movement in and out of the Olympic village.

I think anyone who has dedicated their lives to this event will be willing to take that chance. The problem is that there will be something of an asterisks beside these games because of the postponement. Plenty of athletes who could have won medals 12 months ago are now a little past it while others who didn’t have much of a chance then are now medal contenders. The Aus swimming trials (and American too I believe) is a good example of that. Just think if the RWC of 2011 was postponed then BBBT might not have been there in 2012 but Aaron Smith and Ben Smith would have. 1 year can make a massive difference in sport.

A four year event will always have that problem. But yes, there will be athletes that had one last peak in them and couldn't get past the postponement (along with some for who 2020 was a year too early).

For many you get one shot at representing at an Olympics and I don't blame anyone for taking the risk and going to this one.

I wonder if Tokyo would've been better off not postponing the games. Sure, people wouldn't be vaccinated, but you wouldn't have the delta variant etc.
