@no-quarter but a trophy would be a fitting way to cap a golden era for NZ cricket

@Siam had a big grin on my face reading that post, perfectly put mate. Also laughing my ass off watching the wickets tumble on the extended highlights (fucking love that Spark do these).
It's such a golden era for the Black Caps. Everything about them just oozes class, they make you proud of little old NZ that's for sure. I just love the way they go about their business with no fuss or drama. There's a mental toughness that's been installed across the squad, and the guys coming in are testament to that. Wickets for Henry and Patel, runs for Young. Conway making the opening spot his own. You just know the culture is fucking spot on when you see that happening.
Whatever happens against India in the one-off test, it's been one hell of a journey to get here and we should all be proud as hell of what this group of players have managed to achieve.
We are on top of the world in tests. I truly never ever thought I'd see the day.
You've nailed it!
Just like you nailed Rossco's change of batting technique on day 2. Well spotted mate!

It’s definitely extremely satisfying putting an ordinary England side to the sword away from home. They are fucked well and truly.
The fact a perfectly adequate player like Jeet Ravel has been put out to pasture speaks volumes to me, no disrespect, he’d walk into many other test teams but not ours anymore. The starts that Conway, Jamieson and to a lesser extent Young have made to their test careers is wonderful. We have a capable replacement for Watling which worried me prior to this series. When Taylor gives it away Young slots in and gets a regular spot. The quartet of pace bowlers are good enough to trouble anyone.
No need to mention KW, his contribution has been done to death on here.
Make the most of it fellas, it’s a glorious age.

Yeah it fucking would, especially seeing as we won the CWC but had the trophy gifted to England.
I see Shastri has been in the media bemoaning the fact it is a one-off test and not a series, talking about how much work was involved just to get there. But hey, that's sport. It also tells me they are worried as hell about playing us!

Yeah I guess that’s the whole balancing act of any team. If Patel plays then it would be extremely rough to drop any of the four pace bowlers so it becomes horses for courses but possibly harsh to burden Jamieson with batting expectations too. Would another option ( down the line, not now ) be for them to shoehorn Young in there, have Blundell at seven and then the bowlers? A team of that equivalent makeup never did the Windies any harm in their glory days.
Patel has done well but let’s be honest, the bar had been set very fucken low.
Why not now?
You are in England with a Dukes ball and a legitimate four prong pace attack - and the next test is in December against the Bangers.
I think there is a very real option to roll four quicks and play one of Blundell or Young at six. Southee, Boult and Jamieson all were intentionally rested and Wagner can go all day. It would not be sustainable for a series - but for the last test for half a year 20 overs a day per bowler is not insurmountable.
To my mind this side is light on batting and a fifty from Young or Blundell in support of one of the top order batsman or Watling is more likely to move the needle for a win than Patel taking 6fer in the fourth innings. I can't imagine any scenario where Mitchell, Santner or CdG are given the ball in an attacking position nor do I trust their batting at the top level under serious pressure.
I'm going to be fine with whatever side Kane picks. I think @shark 's side is the most likely especially after Patel's return this test - but given how proactive they have been with the rotation of the quicks I don't rule it out.

I’d be happy with that side but there is an absolute obsession to get an all rounder in there even though all of ours have weaknesses in their games.
Hang on did I read that right, Bangladesh in December ? How exciting !!!!!!! We don’t see them that often.
-
@rotated I like your thinking, and have no issues with the 6/1/4 split if we don't have an all rounder good enough. I think too often teams try to shoehorn in an all rounder when they don't offer enough with either the bat or the ball.

Ajaz got more runs and more wickets than both of them combined

@rotated fair call man. Throw Young or Blundell into the mix for the 11th spot.
There is an unexplainable psychological comfort for a cricket captain taking the field with 5 genuine bowling options though. Not an insurmountable issue having only 4 though. -

I think that is more because our pace bowlers are 35, 32,31 and 6ft8in and it just risks putting Williamson into situations where he has to overbowl these guys - although there are plenty of home tests where CdG, Santner or Mitchell's contribution with the ball was negligible.
In this one off test if it gets down to who our fifth bowler is then we are not going to win so it doesn't matter if it is Ajaz Patel, Tom Latham or Craig McMillan making a comeback.

If only there were a hard hitting all rounder with big match temperament and a Kiwi passport in the UK at the moment...
-
@MN5 oh yeah mate, and Blundell was actually a standout in the field yesterday. Took everything that came near him (except 1 guzunder) and some great grabs down leg. Really good day with the gloves and we fielded well. My non verifiable claim is that the keeper is a driver of that in a non tangible and non measurable way. Yes, my opinion and bias that a keeper affects the overall fielding performance 😁

The bowling all-rounder at 7 from the 70s and 80s was a product of limited batting wicketkeepers and having 4 of the all time greats playing at the same time. That said, 6/1/4 was the West Indies in the 70s and 80s and Australia since then. For a one off test, select a batsman and have Kane roll the arm over if required.

Or a hard hitting all-rounder with a big match temperament and a Kiwi passport who's actually eligible for us and has a good test batting record (but needs to improve his bowling average)....
