That was a classic case of needing on-field Ref to say.. "yeah, I've heard what you've got to say, but... Nah, fuck off, you're full of shit, on-field ref says no issue"

This competition isn’t a complete waste of time, but we have to have an away ref to balance out the home team advantage.

Or just hire good neutral refs.
