Currently everything about ANZ Stadium at Homebush sucks. The seating is miles away from the field. The stadium is miles from everything. At least this fixes one problem and if they've got any sense, the vacated space will be new toilets and food/ bar areas.

And thankfully they came to their sense and didn't build a new stadium at Moore Park. That would have been a disgraceful waste of taxpayer's money.

The roads themselves will be car parks.

In Australia, if it's to do with sport, shit gets done. This would never happen in NZ, too many roadblocks by too many self-interest groups.
-

Field of Dreams shit...if you build it....

Having lived there ages ago, I've always thought that sport in Australia was the major driver in creating nationalism

It seemed that sport and the success from it was about the only thing Aussies agreed on

Good on them for giving their people something to do and facilities to enjoy - money well spent
-

Sport is absolutely a self-interest group. 1.6 billion is a lot of money but if they want to spend it that is their business
-

It just surprises me that someone could decry self-interest groups while not acknowledging that most people want a stadium built on the Auckland waterfront out of self interest.
-

I'd say on the contrary, that Australia is one of the very few countries that actually gets sport right.

It is big, it is huge and thus it should have huge amounts of govt money spent on it. It's captures a nations interest, it drives 20,000 people to one place twice a week, and over double that for the big ones. It occupies a huge percentage of childrens time when outside school, and it's provides some of the highest television ratings day on day, week on week.

It's what's talked about my a large percentage of the population when they have time to free talk, it gets dedicated segments to all media, every single day, and has the ability to control peoples emotions and feelings for days and weeks on end.

Having the right, and best infrastructure available for this topic should be a key part of any govt (local, regional or national) agenda.
-

MR: Would you feel the same about govt investment in movies? I'd say, aside from getting the kids out and running around the movie industry covers nearly all those boxes.

Ps: I'm all for a waterfront stadium for Auckland and anything they can do to make Homebush into a ground you actually want to go watch matches at.
-

I see your point, but I know I don't flick furiously to the 'movies' section of the newspaper each day...
-

FTR, I wouldn't be adverse to the central government contributing to an Auckland waterfront stadium probably up to about $200 million. I can just see why other people would find that to be a waste of money and I don't really think those people should call be nimbys or other such names.

It's entertainment, so I could understand why they would. But there is a colossal difference in the number of people playing sport to making movies.

You don't rush to the movies section of the Fern to find out what crappy 80s music soundtrack Tim is pushing? Then flick over to the Star Wars thread to re-watch the Rogue trailer?

Why would playing sport and making movies be a good comparison? Stadiums are more about getting people to watch sport than getting people to play it.
-

No, no they are not. An intervention is in your not too distant future my friend.
-
The anti sports stadia brigade do my head in.

The amount of bloody whinging that went on up here when Okara Park was upgraded and dragged itself out of the Jurassic period was mind boggling. Yet I didn't see nor hear any complaints when the same council spent truckloads of money on a new library.
It is a building I have never set foot in, I have no need to. But I'm happy for Whangarei to have this flash new library as I realise it's an important part of society - for some people. Am I going to cry about my rates being spent on it, even though I've never been there, or plan on going there? No.

What's my point?

Well, I'm most certainly over generalising here, but it'd be nice if people with interests other than sports in this country could look beyond themselves and accept that a modern sports stadium is an important part of a City's culture, just like a bloody library or theatre is, so pull your head in.

Sorry rant over, back on topic...

Good on Aussie for having their shit sorted with their stadiums.

Maybe our politicians should take notes on how to get shit done!
