@mn5 you contradict your own argument. If there are plenty of bug hitters to come Nicholls has no need to up his scoring rate. He just just keep on doing what he has been - we should be looking to bat once and bat big so slow scoring isn't really an issue at this stage. What we don't want to do is lose three quick wickets early on Day 2 and undo all the good work from Day 1
Yeah - I've written a few times before that for most tests, if you're batting first then I reckon a par waypoint is getting to 220/4.
So we're a little bit ahead in terms of both runs and wickets lost.
First session offers a chance for us to grab the game by the throat - or for England to get right back into it.

After living 18 years in the UK my brother went along to Lord's for the first time for the first day with his cricket mad youngest son. My nephew has lived his entire life in the UK but still rocked up wearing black caps kit.
Good boy!!!

Ross has earned the right to hang up his own cap, especially after the captaincy debacle. Blundell will be replacing Watling shortly as he has announced his retirement, so there's no real point pushing Ross out.
There's also something special about having him hand a new debutant their NZ cap when Kane is unavailable. I know it's small potatoes, but that kind of thing is how team traditions and cultures are built.

Na, that's not how international sport works.
When the new up and comer is a better player, and is showing all the signs of having the maturity to deal with those things that only experience can bring, then it's out with the old, in with the new. Nobody has a right to a spot. Not Ross, not Kane, and in a different sport, not Richie.

At least you didn’t mention BBBR

we're not the plucky underdogs of yore, we're about the best team in the world. Sentiment doesn't mean shit at the top.

My feeling is that the captaincy debacle, albeit nearly ten years ago, shows that NZC is more than capable of not giving Rossco the chance of a graceful managed exit if his form slides. Boult and Stead having the 'I'm available for Edgbaston', "no, he won't be available' back and forth in public is a sign that they can still blunder the basics...
I hope it's managed well, and he does deserve that chance given how close to retirement he genuinely is... but this is still NZC

Just got SPark today and watching the 51 minute extended highlights. Well done Spark, good work.
Whoever commented on Conway's bat sound was spot on - it's weirdly metallic. Williamson's also sounds weird though... not sure what's up with that
I thought they all sounded a bit weird off the bat in that first session. On a couple of deliveries it almost sounded like the stumps had been hit.

I agree so far... will let you know in half an hour what sessions 2 and 3 sound like

Other than 20/20, our domestic cricket isn't really at a standard that lends itself to automatically believing that top performers translate to international cricket. If someone isn't performing at all or is injured, fine, but if the performance is more at a level of not great than terrible, it's hard to use that to justify dropping someone. Form is temporary, class is permanent and all that.

Near perfect conditions for batting today. But rain now expected in St John's Wood tomorrow.

crikey! Conway brings up his ton with a golf shot 6! Wow, what a way to go.
To the manner born!
I’m sure that he is very polite.
