Hurricanes 2021

@pakman He did okay in his first season there. Northampton made the Quarter Finals of the European Cup. By his admission he was struggling for form and to adapt to English scrums.
He's mostly been injured this season. I am rather surprised that he's not hanged up his boots.

Finally the Canes have a quality prop since Goodes and B Franks.
We lose Laumape but gain TJ + Owen + Bird, I’ll take that any day of the week.
Capital Cantabs!

@nostrildamus Owen is only 33 so might have a few years left in him. I'm wondering that because he's only signed a one year contract with the Canes that he might be looking to head back to the Crusaders in 2023.
-
Mr. Holland seems to be spouting on about having O Frank's experience etc to use to teach the young props things. I thought that was what you are paying the scrum coach to do? Incidentally when do you stop being classified as as young player as the majority of the current Hurricanes props have been in the professional environment for three or four years?
Tyrel Lomaz - Started playing Super Rugby in 2017
A Fidow - Signed with the Hurricanes in 2018
F Armstrong - Signed with the Hurricanes in 2018
X Numia - Signed with the Hurricanes in 2019
Tevita Mafileo - Started playing Super Rugby in 2019
P Rakete-Stones - Signed with the Hurricanes in 2020 -

He has been contracted since 31 March to Valley club in Honkers: https://www.ruck.co.uk/signed-100-cap-all-black-signs-for-valley-rfc/

Yeh but how old is his body?! Don't get me wrong, I think it is a great signing. Great prop, great work ethic.
(And it is not like he will have lost his legendary speed). -
@nostrildamus I’d like to see Franks and Lomax in a foot race.
-
Franks signed for two years.

Hurricanes playing club rugby on 15 May 2021:
Wellington
Fraser Armstrong (Avalon, on the bench)
Vince Aso (Petone)
Wes Goosen (OBU)
Vaea Fifita (Wellington)
Pouri Rakete-Stones (Norths; with Napier Pirate relegated to Div 1, I assume this is where he'll be playing club rugby for the rest of the SR season, if he isn't on "Hurricanes duties")Hawke's Bay
Lolagi Visinia (Clive) and Danny Toala (Hastings) aren't on any of the Wellington team lists, so I assume they'll be playing for their HB clubs. They should be. -
National storage huh? He must have a big hunger.
Impressive sized joints but he looks all of his 33 years- professional propping looks a little hard on the body.. -
Gareth Evans played for Havelock North, yesterday. So, hopefully he'll get game time for the Canes, soon. My only concern is how they are going to use him and how that affects Flanders, because they won't drop Prinsep. Evans can play 6, 7 and 8, so probably best on the bench because of his versatility? The Canes need a better leader on the field though.
-
@stargazer he might come in for Flanders, he's been a little bit up and down but that's all down to his experience. Might be good to give him a rest and give Evans a crack. Iose has been solid coming off the bench so I'd like to see him stay there.

I hope he knows how to tackle, cos no one else does
-
@canes4life You are right about that of course but having PUJ in closer than he would normally be was probably exploited by the Waratahs who probably sensed there would be defensive issues closer to the scrum/ruck/maul area because of his unfamiliarity of the defensive requirements and patterns needed in that area. Tackling was so bad (from both sides it must be conceded) that it looked like there might have been Indian bookmakers suggestions that it would be great for rugby if at least 15 tries and 100 points were scored. In essence there was virtually zero tackling close in for a huge part of the game.
-
@nostrildamus Yes he has but he was paying second five on Friday night. He also had another second five playing inside him at first five (O. Ledger) who decided to adopt the "leave the tackling to my loose forwards" method making things even more difficult to get an understanding on just exactly what and where he should be defending in his position on the night.

Oh yes I know, sorry I wasn't clear in my text. I don't know why coaches think 12 == 13, might have played there before but combinations, combinations!
