@mn5 reach is important.
and speed -they apparently measured Ali and he was super fast.
I've been reading up on why Mike Tyson reckons he would have lost against Ali. Really interesting.Sonny Liston was 6 foot 1 but apparently had a reach of about 7 feet. An absolute freak ( and most experts agree would have hammered Tyson )

I know sod all about boxing but even casual observers like myself can see that Ali used his feet in a way that few since have. His head movement was like he was seeing the punches coming way before they even got close.
The cricket comparison might be a prime Tendulkar or, if we had enough video, a Bradman. -

and to continue my cricket comparison even Tendulkar and Bradman got out to good balls.
I'm not saying Ali was invincible just that he would bring something to the current day that the competition may have trouble working out. -

I'm not saying Ali was invincible just that he would bring something to the current day that the competition may have trouble working out.Ali was regarded as the fastest heavyweight of all time, I think that’s something everyone agrees on. As I said earlier though he struggled against Frasier and Norton while Foreman never did.....but we all know what happened when Ali faced Foreman......in some ways that division was a game of Rock, Paper, scissors.....
-
@crucial yeah Mike Tyson said Ali would die in order to win and he would have been scared of him in the ring. His ability to circle and move out of range was pretty phenomenal in those days.
Foreman sounds like a really cool guy by the way, in interviews, he doesn't sound like he wanted a rematch and said he was in awe of Frazier, was worried thoughout the fight Joe was going to get him because he kept getting back up! -

His only losses were to Foreman and Ali ( twice each ). He beat everyone else he faced.
That era was those three with guys like Norton, Shavers and Holmes following close behind.

I think although Holmes fought Ali right at the end when Ali was cooked , and shavers and Norton .
He was the era immediatly after in a lot of ways , those guys were all pretty much finished and he dominated the division in his own right for the best part of a decade , at one stage was about 48-0 from memory
He was all out on his own as the standout heavyweight ,and the division lost interest compared to what came before, it became the era of the 4 kings , Hagler , Hearns , Leonard , Duran , they became the glory fights of that era .But his dominance as a great heavyweight often gets overlooked IMO

Boxing fans in Aus ( not sure what the deal is in NZ)
DAZN for $2.99 a month is a bargain .
had the parker fight last week , Canelo this week ,
you can cancel anytime , no contract
-
@kiwiinmelb Yeah the Parker fights here are PPV but everything else linked to DAZN gets put on it so no more AJ, Dillian Whyte and Canelo being put on PPV here which is only a good thing.

Just watched the press conference on dazn , if billy joe fights as well as he talks we could be in for a great fight
Let’s see how confident he is after feeling some of those body shots , that’s always the litmus test fighting canelo
-
@kiwiinmelb It's a nice change tbh from the usual 'it's an honour to share the same ring as Canelo' nonsense haha.
Are we about to see Saunders emulate his best mate Fury when he did Klitschko in and out of the ring?
Saunders tends to fight to his level. The more I think about it, the more I feel an upset happening providing Saunders doesn't get robed on the cards.
-
Pretty good article and very hard to disagree with any of it, I think Parker has reached as far as he ever will and no disgrace in just being good as opposed to one of the greats.

Really looking forward to it , 70,000 Mexican fans in Texas , cinco demayo day , I do love the Mexicans passion for the sport ,
Would be massive if he pulled it off , I find it hard to pick against canelo in this current form at 168 pounds though , he is like a rocky marciano in a super middleweight body
I think billy joe has to start fast and pinch early rounds , imagine the scenario second half of the fight if canelo feels he has to stop him to win
-
Thanks to reddit I've seen most of the fight. Was really good and very even
That uppercut was evil! Canelo knew exactly where he would slip and threw a big shot. Boy was fuuuuucked after that, and he knew it
Can you imagine how.much pain is involved in a cracked orbital bone?

Billy Joe was doing pretty well , and making like difficult for Canelo to land his power shots being southpaw and a slick mover,
But you kept thinking eventually something would give ,
Canelo is a beast in that weight division ,his power to weight ratio is something else right now , his last few fights opponents have pretty much surrendered to body shots , and I love how active he is fighting every 3 months ,
years ago I was playing league with a guy who copped an accidental knee to the face while tackling and had the same injury , on the way to the hospital he sneezed and his eye popped out with nothing to support it
-
@kiwiinmelb Canelo has won 56 times!

A couple of lucky ones in there , but respect where its due , he stays so active and has such an impressive resume when you look at the names ,
best body puncher i think ive ever seen , watch him train body shots here , the power is unbelievable , makes you wince thinking about wearing those in the guts
