They might not need such a large squad with the 3 home tests against Fiji and Italy. That could be expanded for the RC.
If Moody is out long-term then Bower probably comes into the frame as he was a replacement player last year. Other options could include Ross and Johnstone. de Groot looks handy for a young LH. Moli if he gets back to playing soon.
Bower wasn't great yesterday. Ross has been solid. Agree on de Groot (looks promising)

Flanker: Ardie Savea, Shannon Frizzell, Hoskins Sotutu, Akira Ioane, Dalton Papalii, Tom Robinson
5/6: 1
6: 1
6/8: 1
7: 1
7/8: 1
8: 1Looks about right to me. If they were going to pull the chain on someone, it might actually be Hoskins, as Akira is a 6/8. Alternatively Frizell is really only a 6, so if he isn’t first choice he could be in doubt (with his form, I can’t see it).
I guess it depends on who they want at 8, because if it is Ardie then another 7 could come into play.
I guess they will put Ardie at 7 (Paps on the bench with Robinson as lock/6), and given that Ardie often goes at 8 off the scrum, they may put Akira at 8 as that is one of his weaknesses, with most likely Frizell holding 6 (due to form).

We are talking a stop gap selection. II actually agree with you and think that Ioane has far more potential.Does he have the personal maturity yet though?
Your comment made me think though. Given the financial situation and the way contracts work with the RPA if a player is named in the first AB squad of the year I think they are then on the AB payroll for the next 12 months.
Will that effect squad selection? Do the bean counters have a say? Do the selectors have to make a good case or just have some backups invited to camp to train without 'proper' selection.?
I can see them possibly taking only RM as a 10 (with DMac as reserve) and only two 9s. 6 outside backs also seems a luxury when 4 plus DMac would suffice (especially so if Havili is in as midfield cover) -

@crucial i cant decided if i think Ioane would respond well or poorly if selected. would he realise what he could miss out on or would he think he's bullet proof
From what I’ve heard he’d definitely organise some decent aftermatch functions

Isn't Perenara back for ABs like Beaudie?
Not vs italy mid season
I think he is for rugby championship tho
In fact I'm not sure either will be available vs italy
The Japanese Top League final is on May 23, while the AB tests are scheduled to be in July. I read that BBBR will be back in NZ by the end of May, so surely so will BB and TJP.

Oh ok. That makes sense.
Do people reckon retalick will walk straight into the all blacks squad?

Straight back into the starting XV. We missed his aggression and hard edge last year.

Yes. Watched him play over the weekend for his Japanese team, he is still easily one of the top two locks in NZ. Unlike many, I don't feel that players playing in overseas comps will struggle to adapt to the pace of test rugby. The Boks have proven that, you don't need to be playing SR to be ready for test rugby.

If he isn't I will lead the march on NZRU HQ to demand Foster's resignation.

@mackerzzzz thats how i would lean, hasn;t made himself invaluable for the AB's and i like having a young guy coming through like Vaa'i

Tuipulotu?Paddy or Vaa'i would be most at risk. Whitelock starts with BBBR, and Barrett would be their no.3 lock. It depends on the squad size as they could carry 5 locks.

That was my thought as well. I hope they move away from the lock / 6 compromise. Lock is a specialised position, but RWC, and limited numbers in squads, to accommodate smaller nations had us forced into looking for them (and "utility" backs). Every time that we do it we seem to lose something, somewhere, across the park. Whether it be mobility, strength, turnovers, dominant tackles. Just something, when guys have to try and cover two roles.

Hasn't he lost 10 kgs over there? Surely he'd have to get heavier to be as effective as he was?

i thought i saw that too, will be interesting what difference that will make to his game

@snowy I dont think they will ever totally do away with players that can cover lock/loosie given the attritional nature of the position.
Yeah. I meant in a whole squad rather than a match day 23. If you get forced into an injury replacement from the bench it's a bit tough, but I think that we should pick locks as locks, sixes as sixes in the bigger group (loosies can be a bit more moveable, still not ideal, but doable).
